Ok, below is my first scan with an all-in-one printer... I know...High tech But the reason i tried was because I think I might have found a 1970 S small date in my change today. Was wondering if you guys could take a look. In hand, the 7 is definitely level with the 9 and the 0, but I'm no expert. Thanks
You need to make your scans a bit larger. At least they are sharp. I am almost sure that is a large date. The tail on that 7 is way too low to be level as in a small date.
Here's another scan... I had some other 70s in my copper hoard and the 7 on those were all way below the zero. This one looks level, thats the only reason I was wondering. Plus "LIBERTY" doesnt look well struck. But this coin has seen better days, it could be wear.
Much better image. Now I am sure it is a large date. See http://lincolncentresource.com/smalldates/1970Ssmalldate.html and http://www.cointalk.com/t93080/. First, the hook of the 9 is not pointing east and the tail of the 7 is definitely below the 1 - 0 bases.
I agree. I took a look at my 2011 red book for the tail of the seven and saw that in the book it was even with the zero. Oh well, I'll keep on searching Thanks, rlm, for the links as well.
I wish and hope it's a small date, but don't think it is. I have a half dozen here in my stash that look exactly like that coin. When I posted them, They were said to be large date. gary
Take another look. Follow the top of the seven left to the 9. It points below the top of the 9. On the small date, it points at or barely above the top of the 9.
Ok here is a good looking penny that I think is a small date and grading help would be appreciated since I am a rookie at grading anything. Let me know if you need better pics.
Sorry for upside down but couldn't get bottom portion with iPhone thru microscope. Also the dark area is a shadow as the color is like the bright area all over (uniform).
Large date: Rather than using the upper part of the 7, look at the lower part of the 7. On the large date is hangs below the 0 in the date. And the tail direction of the 9 in the date points in a different direction. Hope this helps.
Yep, small date. I am certain it matches the attributes of that variety. The top of the ER in Ligerty is weak, The bottoms of the 1 7 & 0 are even and the 9 has the hook eastward instead of to the bottom of the 7. Congratulations. I have been searching 1970 S cents for months now and still haven't scored. Nice Find !!
Coop I have looked at the pics like those that you have posted and I think it's a small but I'm no expert so I was looking for better eyes than mine, and ones that are more trained. We are talking mm here and my eyes don't work to that level. ;-)
Thanks Gary as I had this stuck in a zip lock inside the cover of my redbook and have no idea where I found it. Been reviewing coins I've had since a kid and along way from a kid now. ;-)~
