I picked up my first Roman Republic denarius for Christmas as I’ve been eyeing one for a while. It’s from MN. Aemilius Lipidus 114-113 BC. As my first I don’t know exactly what it’s worth so would appreciate some opinions. Thanks in advance!
The rider on the aqueduct (or bridge) makes this coin a more desirable one. I hesitate to put a value on it but if you put the name of the issuer of the coin on a search site you will find some of these exact same coins for sale and I am sure you will find some in the same condition of wear as yours. Tell us what you find.
Congrats on your first! The photos are pretty blurry so it's difficult to see the coin very well, I'm afraid. But it looks quite worn (for example, the rider's head appears to be mostly missing), so I doubt that it's an expensive coin. Here's an example in somewhat better condition for sale on VCoins: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/tr...strian_statue_on_aqueduct/852579/Default.aspx
I took a look and it seems to me that around $70 is about the value but I haven’t really seen one I see as perfectly comparable.
Very nice! Mixed-lot garbage aside, the type was one of the first RR coins that I bought - still a favorite to this day
That is a nice way to start a Roman Republican collection. After 30+ years of collecting I still don't have one like that. Here's my latest one, minted just a year before the OP. This was sold as an Anonymous issue, which I thought it was, but after working on an attribution I concluded it was Cipia 1 with the legends worn off: Roman Republic Denarius M. Cipius (115-114 B.C.) Rome Mint Helmeted head of Roma right; [M. CIPI. M. F.] before, X behind / Victory in biga right with palm-branch, rudder below, [ROMA in exergue] Crawford 289/1; Cipia 1; (3.63 grams / 15 mm)
