I saw their ad in Numismatic News for a 10 croner 1912 gold piece. Having not bought any coins new throughout 2009, I decided to go for it. Almost a tenth ounce of gold. I guess you could say it was an impulse buy, but I've been wanting some new gold for awhile now, its a historic coin with relativly little numismatic value. Having said this, I know coast to coast probably wasn't the best place to buy it, I'm not quite familiar with the series and am curious if these were counterfeited extensively? Being pretty much a bullion coin, I don't care really if it has any problems like a cleaning, as long as its real gold. It seems these coins were re-struck, similiar to the ducat. I wonder are they still re struck today? I'll let you guys know how it looks when I get it. Please don't get too mad! Here's a picture of the coin (stock photo)
Should probably do a search for or ask for reviews on dealers/companys BEFORE making a purchase. December 2003 Numismatist on page 93 "Kenneth Pines, Columbia MD expelled at the direction of the ANA Board of Governors for his failure to respond to multiple complaints: sale of cleaned, whizzed, tooled and other altered coins, questionable grading practices and excessive fees." http://forums.collectors.com/messag...03081&highlight_key=y&keyword1=coast to coast http://forums.collectors.com/messag...93144&highlight_key=y&keyword1=coast to coast http://forums.collectors.com/messag...36108&highlight_key=y&keyword1=coast to coast http://forums.collectors.com/messag...65568&highlight_key=y&keyword1=coast to coast http://64.94.212.253/messageview.cfm?catid=26&threadid=438948&highlight_key=y&keyword1=Coast http://forums.collectors.com/messag...34961&highlight_key=y&keyword1=coast to coast http://forums.collectors.com/messag...44518&highlight_key=y&keyword1=coast to coast
I already knew coast to coast coins wasn't the best to order from... Even if it comes back cleaned its still worth its value in gold bullion. I wonder if I can cancel my order before it ships?
I doubt it will show signs of cleaning or any other problems when it arrives as these KM #2816 are all restrikes that have been struck recently but, back dated to 1912. It should arrive in BU condition. I wouldn't worry about it.
I'd try cancelling the order before it ships. If they say 'sorry', then return it immediately, and consider the 'restocking fee' and return postage as a cheap lesson to not use them again. I have had nothing good come from using C2C, Phil Simms, or a few other major advertisers in CW/NN.
Thanks guys. I've taken your advice and tried cancelling the order. I checked their website and they do say no funds on 'bullion items', this is probably a bullion item I think. If they can't refund me the money then at least I'll have some more gold.
I would be very careful dealing with a company that does not offer a refund! Kind of shady if you ask me!
Here's what they say: We allow you a full 14 day return privilege from the day you receive your order except for bullion orders which may not be refunded. We will repurchase bullion items at our current buy prices.
They are nice looking coins and they are restrikes, but they also tend to sell for a small amount over melt so basically they are bullion So unless they charged a lot over bullion you have a new bullion coin.
Yes they are,and thats why I changed my mind and decided to not cancel the order. I may be getting a bulllion coin anyway, i don't think it will come back cleaned. I'm a bit disappointed they are re-strikes, but I already have 2 real gold foreign pieces that aren't restrikes.
Hey guys, I received the coin from coast to coast today. I'm satisfied with it. Here's some pictures of it. It appears genuine, and even has some orange toning on it and appears original. It doesn't appear cleaned or whizzed, however the only bad thing I can spot on it is the rim of the coin appears nicked, almost like the coin was dropped. Even though this is a re-strike, it doesn't appear like one, it looks old. Tell me what you guys think
Restrikes are not uncommon in early 20th century European gold. They're not counterfeits, just genuine coins that are backdated. Think of the Maria Theresa thalers, they were minted up until the mid 1970's if I recall and all bore the date 1780. I think you have a nice coin and, if you paid something like bullion price, should be very happy.
Good point, and accurate info in regard to RESTRIKES. Bottom line, if you paid near bullion price, if YOU like it, then you can't go wrong with the yellow metal. Though, keep in mind...with C2C, they have ALOT of negative comments from past buyers (myself included). You might be able to do better on the 'bay, but then again, #1 rule of thumb, be VERY cautious when buying raw gold on the 'bay (most would say to never buy raw gold on the 'bay, for very good reason). If YOU like it, and it's real, you could very well be one of the few buyers of C2C items that didn't complain, or have to send it back. I tried them a few times for 'BU' Morgans, and they looked like very high XF-mid AU at best. Most of the BIG advertisers sell sub-par, overgraded POS. By big, I mean those that take out 5-6 pages of ads in CoinWorld and Numismatic News...Simms is another that takes out mega page ads like C2C. On the other hand, there are also VERY good sellers that take ad space, such as CRO for example. With Simms, I bought a GEM BU '31-S Lincoln, and GEM BU '11-S Lincoln, paid fairly strong money...both came back cleaned from PCGS. With alot of b**ching, I got my money back, but was placed on their 'DNS2' (do not sell to) list. They HATE when someone returns items. Be very wary of them, but if you had good luck with C2C, which you seem to have had, more power to you, and enjoy your purchase! Regardless of what I have said (I'm QUITE sure others can chime in and give similar testimony), if your purchase makes you happy, then more power to you...you are in the minority, but there are always exceptions to any rule!! Congrats! Forgot to add...I do like your purchase, and I have a 'thing' about their merch, but again,, I do like your newp!!! Congrats again!!!
Even if it has problems, like you said, it sells for bullion. So if gold has gone up since your purchase, you'd be returning it for less than it's worth.
Thanks, coast 2 coast replied back to me and said there are no returns on bullion. It may have rim damage, I'm not positive, however. It appears genuine. The surface texture appears a bit grainy under high magifnication but I believe that is from the satin finish of the coin. Overall I like it. Being a bullion coin and not a numismatic gold coin I think also odds are it is genuine. I would *never* buy any numismatic gold from coast 2 coast, or ebay, from the amount of counterfeits. I looked up the term 'restrike' as well, it appears it was struck from the genuine dies from that date, just struck more recently (I think this is correct)
