that's a solid moneta mat! i thought i had a nice one, but don't. i have a very poor constantius chlorus one..but man is it ugly. i'll post a nice looking galerius instead. oh wait, found my ugly coin pic...
I have one to share...but it will have to wait. I'm actually pretty pleased with the picture. One of my early successes.
*rats* Ummm, I looked through my hoard and I couldn't find an example ... Oh well => toss another branch onto the ol' bon-fire-wish-list, eh?!!
This Alexandria mint Septimius is distinctive in that it did not shorten MONETA or make it share the A with the start of AVG as seem at most mints.
Curious? => "Hmmm, what's the diff?" I asked myself ... EGYPT, Alexandria. Antoninus Pius. Æ Drachm 138-161 AD Dated RY 11 (AD 147/8) Diameter: 34 mm Weight: 22.03 grams Obverse: Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: Dikaiosyne standing left, holding scales and cornucopia; L ЄNΔЄ KATOV (date) around Reference: Köln 1576; Dattari (Savio) 8383; K&G 35.402 Other: 11h … VF, brown and green patina Ex Greenpoint Collection So, I tried looking-up the difference and stumbled-across this cool link ... http://www.coinsofromanegypt.org/html/library/bmc_intro/html files/coinage_2.html ... maybe not playoff football interesting, but still pretty interesting, yes?
Love all the 'Moneta' posts!!! Especially Mats Op with that detailed reverse...and Bing has a few really excellent examples as well. I'm sure I must have one but damned if I can recall off-hand anymore... Hmmm, Is that because I'm accumulating or bidding on too many or is that another example of the 'Joys of Ageing'??? LOL I'll check a bit later before the Football Marathon ensues....
Nice Monetas, everyone. She isnt a god I ever hunted for. I still own no Abundantia or Annona god reverses.
Here's my first Moneta. It sadly just made me realize I had an ancient coin dealer in town this weekend and I missed him! Dang work! Anyway, I think of this coin as my second ancient coin purchase. When I saw this coin, it was the first time I ever saw a "large" bronze because everything else I owned was much smaller. Dioclectian, AD 284-305 AE, Follis, 9.8g, 28mm; 1h; Aquelia mint Obv.: IMP DIOCLETIANVS PF AVG; laureate head right Rev.: SACR MONET AVGG CAESS NOSTR; crescent in left field; VI in right field; Moneata holding scales and cornucopiae In Ex.: AQP
