Is it just me being irrational or does the mint releasing a set of presumably beautiful $1000 (purchase price) gold .999 proof coins, on a subject that most americans would like to collect but very very darn few could even contemplate affording seem quite elitist. Wouldn't it seem fair to use those same dies and release them also in silver or clad for the masses? Speeking as one of the financially stretched collecting masses. (Looks over at wife and puts hand down)
Between the placement of ALL Presidents on US Dollars and their wives/girlfriends on these bullion gold coins, it is nothing more than to cater to the "let's feel good about ourselves" crowd in Washington that have NO understanding about our nation's coins and the past. It is been almost 60 years since a depiction of Liberty has graced our any of our circulated coins. I have to believe there are many beautiful designs ready for production...but, remember, there are many that feel that Liberty is "too political". Most of the members of the CCAC have no spine or vision when it comes to our nation's coins. I would be hard pressed to see how many people will actually buy these presidential wife coins other than immediate family members. I hope it fails before it goes to production so they can take that gold and make a REAL coin!
