Has anyone bought any of these, either the state quarter or dollar coins? If so what, I have two questions:

    1) are the coins business strike, or satin finish?
    2) what was the quality of the coins? ms60, ms63, ms65?

    Thanks

I've never bought any of these "First Day of Issue" coins because its just a marketing gimmick thought up to get you to spend more for a coin. There is no way for the U.S. Mint or any TPG to determine which coins were minted on which day. All they have to go by is the ship date on the box. "First Day of Issue" coins are a waste of money IMO.

I've bought them before. The were business strike and they looked like any other coin from a roll. I've learned my lesson on them and won;t buy them again.

Crusher, is this what you are referring to?

Some folks enjoy collecting these issues. As far as I know they are business strike and probably wouldn't grade higher than a "65" and in most cases lower than that. I feel they are way overpriced but, to a person who collects them, the price may seem reasonable. Don't expect these types of collectibles to appreciate much in the future as they usually sell for less than the mint issue price in the aftermarket. However, if you want to collect them, then do so and to blazes with what others think...:)

Thanks for the responces. I am not looking to collect them as "first day issues", but if the coins were of a high quality/grade, I was thinking of it as a easier way of getting both P & D mint coins than searching thru lots of rolls of paying for overpriced slabbed versions. I dont mind searching the rolls, actually fun to find really nice coins, but its hard for me to find a bank with rolls of new coins!

Depending on how many of these coins you want why not consider getting mint sets? The quality is usually better....

I get mint sets for the satin finish coins, but for business strikes thats where it gets interesting. I'm looking for MS66/67 grade quarters and without a easy way to get rolls (D mint rolls especially hard to find since i'm in ny)to search they are had to find in this grade. My bank used to get new rolls, but the last few years its getting harder to get them.

I agree with Indianhead. Just a gimmick..Not worth the extra money they say they are worth.

Yep cause in the long run a dealer won't care and only certain people will want them. :D
