I thought I might listen to some of your opinions regarding the U.S. Mint and their issuing of First Day Covers.

Specifically I was interested in this:

    http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wc...ctId=13972&langId=-1&parent_category_rn=10111

Would taking the time, effort and a lot of money be worth it to gather a set of First Day Covers?

What do you think of First Day Covers in general... 50 State Quarters.. etc.. etc.

    Thanks.. John L.

IMHO they are a waste of money. Other then having a coin of that series/date, they have very little else. They might mint 1/2 a million coins that day, so there is no way of knowing if the coin you got is any more special then the very last coin they minted. Its almost as bad as the grading companies grading a coin minted the first 30 days as 'first strike'

That depends on how you wish to qualify it being "worth" it. If you mean in a monetary sense, no it wouldn't be. You can buy about FDC you want on ebay for less than the mint sells them for. If you like them enough, then yeah I suppose it's worth it. But I'd save the money and buy 'em on ebay.

Total and complete waste of money. Those things should sell for $4.95 at most.

Unless you're one of the people that want to send them in for grading. Still, $14.95 is too much.
