I finally completed my first circulated series, Jefferson nickels. I got help from some great people here to get me all but 3. I was in an antique shop today and there was one small coin dealer set-up. I found an MS-60 1938-D for $3.50, an XF-40 1939-D for $10, and a VG-8 1950-D for $11. Looks like he takes his prices from Coins magazine, but the grading was accurate. I know technically the 38-D isn't circulated, but it will work.
Fropa, Congrats on the Jefferson set it is always nice to finish the first set now number two will be easy.:thumb: Bruce.
Good job Fropa, I know just the feeling of being able to finally complete a set. Im close to completing two others with a third not very far behind.
The 1950-D was widely hoarded back in the day. To see one that has seen enough use to be worn down to VG-8 is kind of unusual. EDIT: And congrats on completing the set.
Way to go!!! I love doing sets--in fact maybe I work on too many sets at once! I'm trying to cut back and work on fewer sets...I have one set close to completing---but I think it will take me all of this year and maybe next to pick up the last two coins.... I'm working on Washington Quarters in AU or BU and that is coming along slowly but none the less coming along---I'm wanting to get the earlier dates in BU but that is $$$.... Then I'm working on Dimes (1916-1945) and I should have that done this year Speedy
i got a really good deal on a completed 1938-1961 jefferson set about a year ago. it had every key date, every coin, and every coin was vg or better. well, i bought it for $25 and in there waiting in there for me was a nice looking 1950D. here is the pictures of the key dates i got in that set.
Thanks everyone. It is really nice after about 35 years of collecting to finally have a set finished. I'm one coin away from having my Roosevelt set done, so that will be next. I thought I finished them both today. Another stand had a dish of silver dimes for $1.00 each. I searched through and found 1 51-D so I bought it. I got it home and checked it out closer, it was a 54-D that had a ding between the 5 and 4 that made the 4 look like a 1. coinlover, that was a great deal. I paid that just for the 3 I bought today. That 50-D looks great. Speedy, your sets are in much better condition than mine. I may try to slowly upgrade, but I also like the "been used" look of the sets. I actually realized yesterday that I don't own any silver Washington quarters. I'm not sure how that happened. I think I'll start looking for some of the common dates for around melt to start filling in the holes. I do have the clads complete. I also need to start really working on my Dansco 7070 in circulated condition and my Capital 20th century (408b) in UNC/PRF condition.
Way to go Fropa, feels good doesn't it? I completed my set a couple of years ago all in UNC and the only one I had trouble finding was that pesky '39d. I must have upgraded it 6-7 times until I was satisfied.Fortunately,my coin dealer was more than happy to take the spares off my hands.
Ya know---I don't think it matter what comdition the sets are in---you could have a set in AG and I would still think its cool!...but coins are cool and grade doesn't matter much to me! I would suggest you work on Quarters--its a fun set to do---if you do it in circulated grades is easy to find the pieces in "junk" silver---and normaly the only ones that sell for over melt is the 1932-D and S and my dealer sells the lower grade ones for under $200 each.... Speedy
congratulations! completing a set, no matter the grade is a great accomplishment. circulated coins have much character to them..the more circulated, the more stories they could tell.. way to go!
Hey Fropa that is a geat feeling HUH. You didn't mention how you keep them. Are they in Whitman, Dansco, Littleton, etc type Albums? Do you just keep them in 2x2's? Is that set from 1938 to present? What about all those varieties in the 2004 and 5's? Mine are all in Whitman Albums and I stopped when they came out with the strange ones in 04.
Thanks Mikjo0. Way to go on the UNC set. I'm not sure if I'll upgrade this set or maybe start a new set in UNC, time and $$$ will tell. True Speedy, coins in MS-65 are beautiful, but seeing how the coins wear through use makes each unique so I agree both types of sets are great to put together. I was going to start a new thread but since you brought up "Junk" silver, the guy with the dimes had a bunch of quarters for $2.50 each. Is that reasonable for a common circulated silver Washington? Thanks srkjkd. It is a good feeling Carl. I have all my circulated sets in Dansco albums without proofs. It is complete from 1938 to 2006 with all P, D, and non-Proof S mint marks. I do have all the Westward Journey and Return to Monticello coins.
Congratulations! My first and only finished set was the Jeffersons as well, and I just found that Whitman album in the attic of all places. However, that was before my 20 year break from the hobby, so I have to 'start building again'...
That sounds about right---I think that is about melt value---what I did sometimes was make a deal with my dealer for something like maybe 100 Quarters---get a lower price and then take out the dates I needed and use the rest in trading---most of the time he will take 1 quarter for 1 quarter---or one half dollar for one half dollar---so I did that alot...worked out pretty good...the 1932-D and S are the pricey ones....I would suggest getting them slabbed---I didn't but then I also took one or two back because I'm sure they had a added mintmark. Also sometimes you can get them on ebay slabbed for cheaper than raw---people want high grade ones so they pass up the lower G/VG ones. If you decide you want to save up for a good one I would pick the 1932-S....in AU it would run you around $250 and is worth every cent! Speedy
I started a circulated set of Jefferson nickels about 25 years ago. I've gotten every coin out of pocket change or searching bank rolls. It is complete except for the 39 D and 50 D (which I have in BU) It will probably never be complete because I can't make my self put a bought coin in it. A Friend offered to give them to me, But then I would stop looking for them. Some sets are just more fun Uncompleted
I do albums too and try to get as close to UNC as possible. In nickels I need a 1950D myself, but what's with the 1972, I can't find one of those? Thanks, Douglas
Speedy is right! The 1932 S is a great deal, especially compared to the 1932 D. It just seems too cheap, and can't be that much more common than the D, I see them each about as frequently.
