I will be going to my first coin show next week and was curious if it was acceptable to bring a couple coins to sell/trade to some of the dealers? I found one post for 'coin show etiquette' and want to be sure I am following all the rules.
As far as I know, that choice is solely left up to the dealers. Most dealers at my coin shows do accept trades in coins.
Congrats on your first anticipatory show. To answer your question, I would say, "Yes," but I have never done so. I personally like this article if you have any doubts: http://www.cointalk.com/t209153/
You're going to have tons of fun at the show. Nothing wroing with bringing coins, the worse a seller can say is not interested.
I'm headed to my first show in many years this weekend, don't know if I'm going to take anything with me, I might but not really sure yet. Going to try to pick up some junk silver to add to my growing collection.
Thanks for the replies everyone! Looking to fill some holes in my type set and have some foreign silver coins that I would like to trade towards them.
At the FUN show I went to one of the biggest dealers there to search through boxes upon boxes. All in all I was sitting there for 4 hours straight the first day, but they had a ton of staff present and I have a prior business relationship with this dealer, so I knew going in that they were fine with it. Besides, I spent $2500 there so it's not like I was wasting their time.
How do dealers feel about looking through the 'junk boxes?' I assume any money is good money, but didn't want to be a nuisance by looking for a deal. I have found plenty of good (to me) coins that may not be in the best shape, but as a novice I don't need/want any key dates at this point. I just get a thrill out of getting new coins.
Most dealers that have junk boxes are completely aware that people are going to spend time picking through them -- so have at it. That said, I wouldn't ask a lot of questions about the coins in them, but just look through and buy a few. After a few times, they will likely recognize you and you can start to build a relationship and ask a question or two. But remember to buy a few things -- that has always helped me with my local dealers as they will learn you're not just a window shopper. Just put yourself in the dealer's shoes and treat him as you would treat yourself and you'll be fine. Good luck...Mike
