I attended my first coin show today - "Money Show of the Southwest in Houston, Texas. Probably 300-400 dealers. All I can say is wow, I didn't know there was that many coins out there. I had developed a 5 coin want list (O-Morgans) and although I wandered around in lala land for the first couple of hours I did manage to regain my composure and ended up buying three coins on my list. I also picked up a set of BU Sac$ , just because There was a lot of world coin dealers and appeared most main featured coins where slabbed .. PCGS and NGC mainly with a few dealers having nothing but ANACs. Of course they had a lot of Raw coins but mostly circulated and low-mid MS. I was looking for MS-64 & 65 so I couldn't find any RAW. Several dealers told me when they get a MS65 or higher RAW coin they get it slabbed. I didn't find any great deals I found most coins could be had for Greysheet ask price +-10%. I was just overwhemled by the number of Morgans (and other coins but I was mainly looking at Morgans) and of course I missed a row and after I bought two of my coins I found a dealer who had two which were better strike/price.. oh well!! Anyway, it was very enjoyable all the dealers are very polite, helpful and talkative. I found out there are a lot more coin dealers in Louisiana than I could have imagined...they just don't have storefronts, but I now have there business cards so personalized business will be in order.
Great report, sir. Glad you were able to find some coins you liked. The best part was, you were able to establish contacts with dealers who may turn out to be very helpful to you in the future. Sounds like the way I got started, only I established my contacts through mail-order. Good luck, and keep us informed on your future purchases.
LOL!. I think a lot of us would like to know the same thing. Actually, it is a term used by slab companies, and their supporters, to mean a coin that hasn't had the priviledge of being slabbed. In other words, it's just a coin.
ahhh... okay. I think I was overthinking it... thought it was an acronym for something. Thanks! ~neuron
Good Good for you silver, I love shows also, there is always something cool to buy. I know there are alot of slabs at all the shows, that's just the way it is. There are also alot of great raw coins if you have the patients to look. Keep going to those shows even if you don't buy it gives you a chance to study some coins that you would normally not see. Regards Tony
Coin Shows I am glad you had an exciting time. somtimes they can be overwhelming with all the folks there. Question, did you go the 1st, 2nd or 3rd day of the show? The first one I went to was the Long Beach Coin show on the first day and it wasn't to friendly but was a LARGE show. You stated there was a lot of coins. That was the way I felt, never seen so many. Nothing like new experiences on somthing you are interested in. Better than a first date.Eh
