When I collect by type, I prefer first year issues. As a collector of 8 reales from Spanish colonies, I have acquired a few from the new nations' first issues.

I'll start with the Provincias Unidas del Río de la Plata -- today we identify these as the first issues of Argentina. The earliest silver issues are from 1813 after the royalist forces retreated from part of Alto Perú leaving the mint at Potosí under the control of the revolutionaries.
