hi all! i got a new job at a farm last sunday and i'm finally getting paid $40 tomorrow (friday). today i introduced coin roll hunting to my mom, and she really likes the idea of it! so does my dad! well, my mom said she would take me to the bank maybe saturday. i'm wondering what to get. should i ask for $10 in cents and $10 in nickels? or should i get a box of cents? or should i get $20 in nickels? i do not know what to get. i don't want to spend more than $20-$25. what should i do? should i get 2 rolls of halves? i really want to start this but i don't know which one would produce the most keepers! i'm thinking of getting 10 rolls of nickels, but i'm thinking i want to get a box of cents. or, i want to get 20 rolls of cents and 5 rolls of nickels. what did you start on on your first hunt? i have probaly $150 saved up in my safe, but i don't know if i should get $200 in coins! i'm just very confused right now on what to get. i know not to do dimes or quarters, but i'm wondering if i should get halves. i mainly want to get nickels and cents to search through since those produce the most keepers. i really need to know what to get.
Bryan I know how much you enjoy finding wheat cents so why not start off getting $ 25.00 in cents and see how you do. That way you can also look for 1970-s and 1960 large and small date cents plus 98, 99 and 2000 wide A M's start off slow until you get the hang of it. Bruce.
I agree. Go for the cents. That wil give you hours of fun searching (as opposed to Halves that will be done rather quickly) . I put together a circulated of BU memmorial cents through roll hunting. Found a number of wheaties also!
$25 in cents usually gives me 25-30 wheat cents nickels are good too if you like the pre-64 nickels. It's easy to find them from 1938, 1939 and the 40's and 50's
You might want to ask if they have any rolls of halfs to begin with, since most banks in my area rarely have them available. Actually ask if they have any rolls or single Ikes. You may get lucky. I have more luck finding silver coins in rolls of dimes then any other denomination. There were hundreds of millions of 1964 (silver) dimes minted through 1967. When you search dimes makes sure you check for the possible 1965 silver dime error. This one could bring big bucks, and they are known to exist. But if wheat cents are you thing get them. Make sure you have your red book handy to look for those 80's errors and 90's wide AMs. You could start saving the coppers as well. Hope you have fun and good luck to you in your searching.
Got for the cnets, more volume better odds of finding something, besides the wheaties will be there. (Hopefully)>
I would say get the cents. They will last you longer. Also, don't get discouraged if you don't find anything right away. It may take a few boxes before you find a wide AM or other interesting and valuable variety. Be paitent. They are out there. I just sent to NGC a 1994 doubled die reverse(fs-039.9) that I found while searching boxes. I'm hoping it comes back as MS-64 Red.
The best part of searching rolls is that after you are done you can roll them back up and take them back to a bank and start over! I take my re-rolled coins back to a different bank and then go back to the first bank to get more rolls. Kind of time consuming but you don't get last week's rolls back again! Have fun.
