Hi folks im brand new here and this is my first post ! My 12 year old son found this coin with his grandfather and was dug up about 9 inches deep from the ground. It was found on the site of an old french fort dating 1720s or earlier before british captured and destroyed it in 1745. Im sorry but this is the CLEAREST two pics i can get of it. Any help would be great. The ONLY two possibilities it could be is French or British coin. Any help would be awesome !
This would be an Acadian location in the Maritimes in Canada in a French controlled colony back in 1720s or earlier. It also could be British from when they imvaded in 1745 but no clue. This is tbe best image of coin i can get. Its very worn.
Ill take some head on shots but sry folks nothing will really show i had to slant it just to see the head in image. Ill take more now and post them.
Front cant make out a thing. Back has deff gog a face on it but NO CLUE. Found in an area where french expulsion from Canada took place. An old french fort captured by British.
Heavy oxidation, but there's folks here who can see through all that. Hopefully, there'll be some by shortly.
Yes thanks i hope someone can identify it. I know its not valuable but id like to find out what country. I think its king Louis possibly.
The first picture in the first post looks like a British King George I farthing or halfpenny to me. King George I ruled from 1714 until 1727. You can see the various styles of his coinage here: http://www.coindatabase.com/coin_libras.php?pais=350. While the coin has no actual numismatic value, it is priceless with its historical context in mind considering where it was found.
Nice coin! It reminds me of the King William III British halfpenny I found on the 4th of July last year on a home site dating back to the 1760s (coin on the left). As for the ID, I frankly have no idea. It’s definitely an old copper coin and it doesn’t look American to me. I’m going to guess randomly and go with George I halfpenny. Hopefully somebody else here can give you an accurate ID. Oh and here’s a tip. Try shining a bright flashlight on the coin from an angle when you take pictures of it. My William III halfpenny barely shows any details without a flashlight. The light outlines a coin’s details as demonstrated by my photo.
wow it deff looks like the coin on left. King william i think it is. British were very active in that area frkm 1745 to 1770.
