Well, after almost 40 years collecting, I have finally finished my second complete set. I have been collecting for years using the ADD method... never focusing on any one thing. When I finished my ASEs last year, the feeling was so good, I started more sets in Danscos. I still do the ADD thing and tend to collect whatever comes my way at the right time, however, I have been focused on making sure to fill my Danscos. Today I finally filled the last holes in my 1938-2011 Jefferson (w/proofs) Dansco! Amazing feeling of accomplishment. I say I'm 'sorta' finished because there are 3 holes that have circulated coins. There is a coin show this weekend, and I hope to upgrade those 3 holes to match the rest of the set. All but those 3 coins have great eye appeal. I don't worry about how many steps, or what the exact grade is. All I worried about on these Jeffs is that they look AMAZING when you open the book. For all I know, they could all be MS60 in technical grade, but man are they great looking in the album. I picked flashy examples... electric blue toning, rainbows, champange golds, blue/green proofs that bring a tear to your eye. Not a problem coin in the bunch. Anyway, just wanted to share my joy. I'll have to keep my fingers crossed to find the 3 upgrades as nice as the others. They are the tough years... 39-D 39-S and 42-D I had an NGC MS-67 1939-D in my hands this morning... but at $250 bux, just to break it out and put it in the Dansco... um, nope. I'll find some raw ones this weekend (knock on wood).
ratio, post some pics if you can.. Love Jeffersons! Still working on filling my folder 1938-2011. short the 38s, 46s, 49s, and both 2009 P and D. Been working on that for about 4 years. I haven't been trying to get MS examples and most of mine have come from roll searching (all but the 39D), but I'd love to see some pics of a full folder with some flashy and toned coins!! I have been working on a registry set for the proofs. But WAY short on that. Congrats!
I want to do that. I am a terrible coin photographer though. I might try it again and see what happens. I think it might photo better if the clear slides are out of the pages.... ???
Ya know, when I started, I thought the Jeff set would be my least favorite, but the bang for the buck and great tranluscent toning that is common to the nickels just blew me away as I built the set.
Should help to reduce any glare on the pics with the slides out of the way. I do like the toning on the Jeff as well. The best part of starting a Jefferson collection for me was that I actually have a chance to fill a set from circulation and then work my way up.
Well, I have all my modern denominations in Danscos, and filled all the post 65 holes with mint sets/proof sets. So if I get the rest of my modern silver proofs, all the sets will be finished (65up) at the same time. By default, the JFK set will be totally done at this point. (I have fallen in love with that one too) The 32-98 Quarters will certainly be the last modern set I'll finish. The FDR dimes are the ones that I originally thought was going to be my favorite, but it got old quickly. Funny how that works... Started out favoring the dimes, ended up ga-ga over the nickels and halves. Short answer: JFK is next, and it is a nice set too, but not as flashy as the nickels.
Sounds cool... just wondering if folks that complete a Jefferson set choose to include the 1994-P and 1997-P matte proof nickels? I love those coins and would include them if I were doing a set. But I can see why some wouldn't since they are special proof strikes. But then again, they don't look like traditional proof Jefferson nickels either.
It goes something like this: Hmm, that Franklin looks nice. Oooh, look at that 43-S Mercury in the related items, I like that! Then oh wow, the same seller has a silver mint set for only $10, can't pass that up. 10 purchases later and you still haven't gotten the Franklin you originally set out for
I can almost imagine how spectacular it would look like when you open the album. Good job getting this together, it takes a lot of patience to get a collection this size together...and with proofs as well!
I thought about the matte proofs, but there is no spot in the album for them. Even though that is a lame excuse not to include them, the point of the excercise is to fill the album with coins that compliment each other, so out of sight, out of mind.
you should get yourself a 1994 matte nickel. Their prices have recently dropped and they are IMHO seriously undervalued. A Jefferson Coin and Currency Set used to cost around $80-$100, now they can be found on eBay for $65 BIN. The set includes a 90% silver dollar, a $2 bill and the matte nickel. The dollar is worth over $20 in melt, so the nickel costs you around $40. Well worth it for a matte proof nickel with a mintage under a million.
I bought a bunch of the Jefferson Coinage & Currency sets in the past couple of years cause I really like the matte nickel and like Mike says, you sort of get a rebate each time you buy the set as you have a silver dollar and a $2 bill you could sell off if you wanted to break up the sets and just keep the nickel. Earlier this month I broke up 50 of my sets and sent the nickels to PCGS for certification. I should have them back in another week or two Will likely sell off the silver dollars to get some of my money back out of these sets, here's a pic of them outside of the sets, much cooler I think that a boring roll of Morgans or other silver dollars! I should have taken a pic of the 50 matte proof nickels in the plastic flips before I sent them in... oh well...
Congrats ratio411 I too just finished a Lincoln memorial cent book so I know the feeling well! Cant wait to do it again! Although I really don't go for the flashy unused look as I only collect circulated coinage like I do my stamps. I like them postaly used also; not in worn or thinned but used. Not ever worried about making money as I just collect for fun. Although at last count I have about 8 pounds of coin silver! Anyways-Congrats on your achievement!
