Hello All Anyone have any good way to rid a coin of fingerprints without destroying the luster. I recently bought two coins that I waited over two months for, and they both have prints on them. I will not return these to the seller because I don,t want to wait maybe three months to get them back. The coins have really strong strikes on the obverse and reverse for the year they were minted and this seller on Ebay is a #&(%^$@!+?, if You catch My drift. These two coins are for My collection of Jefferson,s . Any suggestions? Daniel
Sorry to hear that Dan. You really have only three choices: Hope that the fingerprints are really, really, really new, and give the coins a quick acetone bath (pure hardware/paint store acetone, not adulterated nail polish remover, followed by a series of at least three baths in distilled/deionized water, and air drying on a soft cloth with no rubbing. (Probably too late, but worth a try. Send them back for a refund and look elsewhere for coins from a more careful seller Suck it up and welcome the great strikes into your collection, fingerprints and all. BTW, even if the prints appear to come off in acetone, there's no guarantee they won't reappear later.
doesn't that just frost you!? why is it that there are so many nitwits in the coin selling business that don't have enough brains to handle the 'product' correctly? people that are expected to treat coins with respect and consideration like the tpg's for one. it burns me even more when i see ( or worse buy ) a coin that is slabbed and has prints on it and what about the mint employees too? who wants to get proof coins sent from the mint with someones prints on them? BOY I FEEL BETTER NOW! grizz
Thank,s Sat! Chemicals on a coin raise the hair on the back of My neck. I will just have to suck it up as I,m sure it was from a mint worker or a bank employee a long time ago. Daniel
Hi Grizz Funny You should mention the proof with the print. I have a gotten two proof sets with fingerprints on the Lincoln pennies. Sloppy, Sloppy ,Sloppy, Was probably done on Monday or Friday! Daniel
What coins are they? Proof, business strike? Good luck, acteone basically one of the safer ways to do it, but got to be careful. But also depends on the coins. Phoenix
As noted already. It is amazing that this is mentioned so much in this coin collecting world and it just keeps on happening. Since eveyone's body chemistry is different, some people have highly acidic sweat and should not be allowed to touch any coins.
