Finding value for a 1000 Reis 1720 coin I'm trying to find out the value on this coin. Anyone know what would be a good online source? Also, anyone have any opnions as to condition/grade? Thanks in advance
Well, it would probably help to know that it is 1000 Reis, not 100 Reis (which didn't exist at the time). It is 0.9170 gold, equating to .0793 ounces. My world coin book from 2003 lists the coin with the following conditions/values: VG: $45 F: $75 VF: $150 XF: $265 But of course this is outdated - at the price of gold in 2003, the gold in this coin was worth around $30. Today, the gold value alone is worth $137. But hopefully it gives an idea and you can do more research.
I noticed my typo and correct the 1000 reis thing before anyone had posted. Would you say the condition would be VF? edit: Looks like my change only changed the title of the thread once you get in, not the thread title in the main forum section....strange.
I think it looks VF, but I'm a noob at grading and especially for this coin which I haven't seen before. Here are a couple recent auctions (all last month) for similar coins of that era (some are a different year/denomination) 1714 1000 Reis went for $276 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=3017&lotNo=29544 other $299.00 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=3017&lotNo=29546 other $276.00 http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleNo=3017&lotNo=29545
The 2nd & 3rd are a different coin - 400 reis. The 1st one is the same coin. The quality of the detail is similar, only mine doesn't have that discoloration and mine appears to be better centered.
Yes, I said that they were similar coins of that era, but different years/denominations.... But I agree yours looks better from what I can see in the image you provided.
