can somebody tell me if cointrackers.com is a reliable source on info when determing value of my coins? thanks, devan
I would say no. The best way, I think, is to check completed auctions on Ebay, Heritage, etc. A redbook may get you in the ballpark.
It would really depend on your purpose for knowing the value. If you are planning to sell some coins individually on ebay, than completed listings would be the way to go. If you are planning to sell them to a dealer, subtract about 40% off of that number. If you want to know the value for insurance reasons or are just curious, the red book would be a good place to start. Just be aware that red book prices are generally on the high side.
I don't know how much of a coin nerd you are, but the red book is filled with plenty of great information. I reread it about once a year, but I am a big coin nerd.
I plan on holding onto them I was mostly just curious. but from what I read on here the redbook has good history in it and I'm intrigued so I think thats the next thing I get. one more question. would you recommend strictly flips for storing "valuable" coins or would 2"x2" ziplocks work just as well so that I don't have to buy different size flips? or could I buy quarter size flips and use them for every size? thanks for the info guys
I'm just getting started but I'm learning a lot from the people on this forum and I enjoy learning about things in general, knowledge is power. and coins are really becoming more and more interesting to me so I suspect ill become a big coin nerd myself lol
I would not recommend zip lock bags as they contain PVC and will cause damage to your coins over time.
The zip locks offer no protection for a coin whatsoever. It can still be damaged by another coin. Flips are something altogether different from what you are probably talking about. I think you mean the cardboard 2x2's with the round mylar window that do come with different "window" diameters. Flips are a (relatively) stiff plastic holder that looks like a pair of saddlebags with the openings on the underside when folded in half. You place the coin in one pocket and you can place a 1-1/2x1-1/2 note card in the other pocket with the info written on it. Another alternative would be AirTite coin capsules, but these are even more expensive than the other two. I don't know what "valuable" means to you. What types of coins do you own, and in what condition are they? Chris
I don't have much now, a couple buffalos, I have come across a lot of proofs that I've kept that look to my novice eyes to be nice looking coins but since Im just starting out I can't really speak on the condition, I just wanted to know the best wat to store the couple coins I already have and what I might find in the future. your a great help with a lot of my probably stupid questions, Chris but I'm learning. thanks a lot. so if I get the cardboard would it be condidered taboo to store a dime in a quarter size window?
What? Use the wrong size holder? Blasphemy! It may not be as tight of a fit as the proper size holder, but I use only quarter and dollar size holders. They fit most every size coin pretty well. Just don't tell anyone here, I may be shunned.
If it were me, I'd get the Saflips. You can order them from any number of places, but I've given you the link to JP's Corner. You can get them with or without the insert (which comes with a 2x2 box). The Saflip can hold every coin up to and including a Silver American Eagle. I prefer these over the cardboard 2x2 because you would also need a stapler, and the staples themselves can damage another coin.
