I have been to 5 of my local banks and 3 branches of the bank where I bank. None of them have NEW coin. only circulated rolls. I thought maybe the Big Boys, but Chase and BofA said they don't have them and don't get them. Where do you get your NEW uncirculated rolls?
Banks can only order coins. They can't specifically order new coins. When the order is filled it is filled with circulated coins first. Uncs aren't shipped until the circulated stocks are depleted and then they send the oldest Unc coins first. So getting the latest new coins really is the luck of the draw. Also some areas consistantly order more coin than others. These areas are the ones most likely to have new coins. Other areas, such as where I live almost never order coins. They come in from outside, accumulate at the banks and get shipped back to the Fed. During the entire state quarter program we only got one shipment of new quarters (Mass) More than half of the quarters in circulation are still eagle back. Most of the coins around here with the exception of the cents still date from before 2002. The cents mostly date before 2009.
Can't say for sure, but I think new coins are distributed through federal reserve banks. I think that there are 12 federal reserve banks in some big cities around the country. If you live near one of those, that would be worth a shot. There is a gas station about 200 yards from my front door. They get their coins from a Brinks type service, but they always seem to get brand new rolls. I have the cashier hold a few back for me every once in a while.
well, that seems to be the story I've been getting from the banks. I wonder if businesses that use Brinks and the like can order new coin? Maybe we should start a thread called "shout out for new coin" and have people report where banks have new coin when they show up? Surely some resourceful person must have an angle on this because there are several folks that buy boxes of new every year.
Softmentor, if you have an acquaintance who has a business account at the banks, ask them if they would request a box from the "business account" window. If they will, ask them if they would request new coins ( such as cents) if possible. My wonderful bank ( Rabobank NA) vault manager will look through the boxes ( most have holes in one side to see that all of the rolls are there before opening) and spots the bright ones. Sometimes, it is a mix of rolls ( new and old) and sometimes not. I NEVER return the coins to the bank, even though they said they would take the ones I didn't want, I find ways to pass them on at Walmart, Vons, etc,. They are not obligated to provide bulk coins to a regular customer, but they do so for business customers, and also for nice regular customers who social engineer the process. Try exchanging an Indian cent or Buffalo 5 cent peice with them to interest them in what you are doing., or "sweets", they are human and get many more complaints than compliments. We see many more boxes of new cents here on the Mexico border as they tend to flow to there as change. Jim
welcome to the club- perseverance is key- many bank tellers and employees absolutely DETEST coin collectors expect to be treated with great scorn if you continue to pursue this.
and the mint has started charging a premium. They had too many people buying with credit cards for the miles then just depositing them (dumping them) at the bank. Of course you can buy the REALLY expensive rolls, but I'm looking for business strike common rolls at face value cost. Took your advice Cherd, and talked to a merchant I know today. He said he can't get new rolls just for the asking but he does get them from time to time randomly, and will let me know if some come in. So, looks like at least I have an advocate. Even staring in the face of bank tellers glaring at me, I think I'll take your advice too, DesertGem, and "sweeten the deal" with some of my nicest dates. They know I grow them, since I do the farm's $ business there, but I don't think I've ever given them any. MMMM sweet dates... could win a friend.
