The only coins I never picked up were the nickel super-glued to the sidewalk in front of T.G.I. Friday's and the pennies on the ground in the snow under the McDonald's drive-through window a few weeks ago (there were too many cars behind me).
Yeah, I rode my bike to work a good bit over the last few years, and I noticed that there were actually more nickels and dimes than pennies in the road at the intersections. Sometimes even quarters. I generally didn't try to grab them, because I didn't want to get run over.
I had a friend in Hawaii whose name was Mr. Simpson and he got me started into selling and buying coins on E-bay...he was a very tall gentleman who always had a big dip of tobacco in the corner of his mouth. He was always looking down on the ground. I use to kid him and tell him there was no “discharge on the ground” (we were both in the Army at the time). He smiled and opened up his truck liner compartment and pulled out a cigar box FULL and I mean FULL of gold chains, rings, coins (not just silver, but gold) diamonds, and rubies. Etc. He told me something I never would forget..."Always look down...that's where the treasures are". Since then I am constantly looking down looking for loose change or anything else I can find; pennies included. =)
I can't tell you how many times I have lost my family on vacation or at amusement parks because I'm scanning the ground...
My ex finances father fond a 1909 vdb in a gas station parking lot, so to answer you question yes I pick all coins up. Best find for me on the ground was a 2000 wide AM Lincoln cent
Many years ago, my uncle always walked everywhere, always with his head down. He always picked up any change he found, took it home and put it into empty coffee cans. He was eventually able to use all those coins to buy a house for him and his family with no mortgage. Yes, picking up any change can be profitable.
I did this on a run once to see how much I could get i made like 27 cents, mostly hammered by cars though.
We super glued a penny on the café floor at work once waiting for my boss to come by. He spent 10 minutes on his hands and knees with a pen knife until he got it. LOL.
I always have picked up every coin, and few bills, that I see. Hardly anything gets past my old eagle eyes. Whenever I walk around the neighborhood I often come back with extra coins I've found along my route; the anticipation of additional finds helps me keep on walking just a little further.
