In case you were wondering this contest is all about me! If it works as planned I will be the big winner. Your job is to find one of these coins for sale online (not ebay-I already seen the coins available there). If the price is reasonable and I end up buying it then I will send you a prize. If after a couple of weeks no one is able to find a coin I end up purchasing I will send out a prize to the person who's coin was the closest. The prizes will be circulated silver coins- dimes, quarters, or halves. And now, the coins I am looking for... Braided Hair Large Cents- 1857 in VF or XF (this coin needs to be graded PCGS, NGC, ANACS due to possible fakes) 1844 in VF or XF 1843 in VF or XF 1839 in VF or XF And since we have currency collectors on the site as well- National Currency Notes for Chico California Redding California (I already know about the Chico notes available through Executive coin and Horwedel)

Perhaps a question is how much are you looking to spend on the large cent a round about figure? In any case, here are are about 8 different 44's in different grades ( VF-XF) included, varieties and price ranges. There is only 1 1839 but in MS63 and no 43's or 57's currently. http://www.largecents.net/forsale.php
Hmmm - my dealers seem to be out of the dates and ranges you mention. I can find 1857 in AU at 900fine, Harlan Berk, or NFC Coins. Now Tom Deck has a very sweet 1839 on Largecents.net, but it is a MS63. Now H. Craig Hamling does have a nice 1839 XF40 - you might want to check out his raw coins also. I don't think you have to worry about getting a fake from him.
Some great coins people have found, there are a couple I will need to take a second look at. It seems there are two different types of pricing on these coins. If the company doesn't determine the varieties of their coins the prices are normally lower, those that do determine the varieties charge more (even on the most common variety). Since I am looking for the more common coins from each date I would say here are the rough amounts I am looking to pay- Since my grade range is pretty wide the price for each coin would vary as well. 1857-up to $350 1844-under $100 1844-under $100 1839-under $100
I have placed an order for a pair of coins (one on my list and one not), hopefully still in stock. As soon as I get a confirmation I will post the winner (first winner?)
Our first winner is mark_h, I was able to pick up the 1857 cent from Harlan Berk. Also picked up a cheap cleaned 1798 since I didn't have a cent that old. I will be sending him a pm for his prize, thanks to everyone who has given me links so far. Still looking for the perfect coin for the other years so if you find one post it!
It was under $300, graded NGC AU50, I had only seen a couple graded 1857's for sale and both were lower grade and over $350. It is a nice improvement from the placeholder I already had...
Hey thecoin, I see you are new here. If the open is interested in selling the holed 1857 large cent shoot him a private message as per the forum rules. And :welcome: to cointalk
