I have been searching for a semi quality specimen of this type for quite some while. I guess I was second in line to be able to purchase this from my local trusted coin shop. I payed 118$ for it, I feel that its a fair price to me anyways. But out of curiosity, what would you pay/grade it?
I think you paid a good price however it looks cleaned to me. I have some cleaned coins too, I mean I am not that much of a purist. It just looks like it's been cleaned that's all.
I don't think it's been cleaned. Those lines are not parallel, or uniform. Look like regular contact marks to me. I won't try and grade it though.. I really have no idea with these coins. Is that a chopmark on the reverse? EDIT TO ADD: Maybe some of them are parallel but I don't feel it's enough evidence to prove cleaned.. I could be wrong.
AU Details - Cleaned and Chopped. Very nice coin though! I am looking for one for my 7070, this is pretty much the level I intend to acquire.
It doesn't appear cleaned to me, but I could be wrong. Its not nearly as lustrous as some of my morgans, but I am not sure if Trade's were ever that way. And yes, that is a chop mark on the reverse, not sure of its meaning other than to "prove" its authenticity to other chinese/asian traders of that day.
I would think it's about EF45, but more like AU50. 70% chance that it's cleaned. Asian mark may make it more valuable.
Nice coin, one dealer in my area is trying to sell a counterfeit for about half that amount, I saw another one not as nice looking except it has not been cleaned for about 70 dollars more, I think yours has almost au details, It does look cleaned but it is not what I would call a harsh aggressive angry cleaning.
Cleaned. Chopped. EF-45. IMO, in this case, if you're happy with what you got for what you paid, that's all that matters
I am happy with it, Its hard to find nice details on one of these in my neck of the woods anyways that isn't a fake or holed or overly chopped. I wonder if anyone on here has any deep knowledge on the chop mark topic?
And thats all that matters, so long as your happy with it. Ive got a cleaned Trade Dollar myself with Au58 detail. A elitist coin collector may look down on it but I couldnt be happier with it.
I absolutely guarantee you that coin has not only been dipped, but polished harshly with a wire brush as well. The unnaturally white surfaces, combined with faint orangey traces point immediately to a dip. The chop mark further reduces the grade - I would call this Net EF details, cleaned and chopped. But if you are happy with it, that's all that matters! Just as long as you recognize it for what it is. The price you paid for it reflects the problems with it - you paid a fair price I think.
I would say au 50 harshly cleaned, but still a nice coin. If i had been offered that coin for that price i would have bought it.
Here he is again , you see little kings all over the the obverse of your dollar . Little kings and scepters defiantly the result of old rollers.
Quick questions in regards to this coin.....what are "little kings and scepters"?...and how do they affect the value?
