It was a '22 no-D strong. Killer. I decided on BN color to 1940 and then RD afterwards. But I compromised here and there. Sometimes it's harder to find a nice BN than a RD! I stopped at 2007...ran out of holes. I like collecting raw coins. So much more fun. But slabs serve their purpose, I know. Lance.
Amazing collection, hats off to you for putting together a beautiful collection! How long did it take you?
That's one heckuva coin for the final slot! Looks like a nice F-VF (closer to VF, but grading from an image....). Nice looking set! I particularly like the woodgrain on the '39-S! Congrats on filling that last hole! Feels GOOD to finish an album!!
Amazing and congrats on completing the collection.. What will you do with it now, sell it or keep it?
It took a pretty long time. I was only focused on finishing it during the last three years. Much of it goes back to the mid-90's. I tried to do as much as I could from pocket change. But obviously the Memorial proofs and many of the early ones I had to buy. I had a stash of wheaties from the late '50's - early '60's, and I helped a friend by buying her dad's set a couple of years ago, after he passed away. That helped a lot, except for the counterfeit '14-D. I'm thinking of hitting it with a punch to obliterate the mintmark. Good eye, Numismania. That '22 no D was in an NGC/CAC VF20 holder. I broke it out so carefully that I could actually reuse the slab and no one would know. Except that that would be fraudulent and I would never do that. Everyone says you can't remove CAC stickers. Baloney. With a very sharp razor it came off so cleanly I was able to replace the one I lost on a 1926-S 64RB (PCGS removed a little green spot for me and reholdered it with the same cert#). rlm, I don't know much about encores. This whole set isn't worth what some folks pay for a single red cent. But I'm happy with it. It was kind of fun building it instead of buying all the pieces. Lance.
If that were mine (only in my dreams would mine look that good)...and Lincolns DO look 'sexy' in a Dansco, a MUCH nicer set to look at in a Dansco, over Whitman, or the other 'pop in' albums, where only the obverse is seen. Were it mine, I'd put that in it's slipcase, and put that sucker away. I know that the OP wouldn't put just 'any old coin' in there to fill a hole. With the key dates in that album (what, no '55 DDO??? lol ), boy, would I be proud to own that set! That'd be passed down, were it mine...unless, of course, there was no interest shown by my kids (IF I ever have any)...then, I'd sell it on my 65th b-day and have one helluva time! But, I'm sure the OP has sets just as nice in series that would blow the Lincoln set away!!!
I've been working on that album for nearly as long as I've been collecting coins... congratulations on finishing it, I still need all the keys and most proofs. (And my coins are not high grade)
Lance, that is where the fun is! I knew a crazy old guy who would work on sets, and if he ever finished one he sold it complete right away. I know for sure multiple lincoln, IHC, washington quarter, etc set he finished. Who knows what other sets. I asked him why he didn't just stop and enjoy what he put together, he told me, "all of the fun is in the chase, what fun is a bunch of full albums on the bookshelf?" Yeah, he was a crazy old man, but that statement has stuck with me, and every day in both collecting and life I realize he wasn't all that crazy after all. For an encore? Find another set that engrosses you and makes you lie awake at night thinking about, and makes you scurry to every dealer table at shows hoping to acquire a new specimen. Make yourself a new chase! Chris P.S. It is a very nice and well put together set Lance, you should be very proud. Never worry what others can spend on a coin, I bet you get just as much enjoyment from coin collecting as they, maybe more. You do it for the fun, they have to worry about their "investment". P.P.S. There is a famous large cent collector, (Brown I believe), who had one of the world's greatest large cent collections. He sold it at auction, all of them. What did he do the next day? He started a large cent collection, eventually selling it all too.
Very nice set. The wheat reverse on all the reds look fantastic. I plan on finishing up my Lincoln set (I have about 4 key business strikes to go), but mine will not be at the same condition level.
Hey Lance. Awesome job. I was starting to think I was the only one in the world who collected raw! The set looks fantastic, congradulations.
