I decided a couple of weeks ago that I wanted to add some gold to my collection but bullion simply doesn't interest me. I wanted historical coins that had numismatic value well above the simple melt value. I started looking at Ducats and Escudo's from the 1700's and decided I like the design and the history of the Escudo pieces more than the ducats so I spent a few weeks trying to find the right coins for the right price...no easy task. I did as much research as I could online to gather info on rarity and values but the supply is so small on some of these coins that I ultimately had to purchase from a dealer so I may be into the coins for a bit more than they are worth but I didn't buy these as an investment so I am ok with the prices which averaged around $330 a piece. From what I can ascertain from online information the smaller denomination escudo's are rarer then say the 8 Escudo pieces which would make since due to their small size which would make them easy to lose. I am not putting too much stock in the current population reports as there still may be hoards of these coins in Europe that haven't been graded...who knows? Ultimately I opted to spend a bit more for graded pieces as I have limited experience with buying gold coins in general and I couldn't take a chance on buying ex jewelry piece or pieces that weren't authentic.
Very nice Shane :thumb: You sure don't wanna get hooked on world gold though. It's gets pretty pricey from here on out ! Of course if you can actually manage not getting hooked you'll be a better man than me
I could have gotten a 8 escudo from Sedwick for a little over $1000, bought a seated dollar & $10 gold piece instead. These suckers have gone up since then... Very nice coins & congrats on acquiring them.
Yes generally from what i have seen European coin issues' are the least slabbed even compared to Asian coins. Might be due to high ownership domestically ?
Wow those are some awesome world gold. And if they averaged at $330 it seems like it would be tough not to buy one, just for the "cool" factor. Nice start to a new collection... Good luck finding any that are toned though
