Is there a variety on the 76 S Silver Kennedy half dollar for a filled S mint mark versus a standard S mint mark? Or is this so common it is not considered a variety. See pictures to get an idea of each S mint mark I am seeing.

I assume you are referring to the 40% silver business strike rather than the 40% silver proof. The CPG, 4th Edition, Volume II has no variety listed, and James Wiles' book on Kennedy's lists only two for the date/mm, both DDO's. According to Dr. Wiles, the mintmark punch wore out in 1974 and was replaced by a defective punch that was itself doubled on the top loop on the lower right outside. You should keep in mind that, unlike proof strikes, business strikes are struck just once in the coining chamber so minor variances in the pressure of the strike can produce slight differences in appearance.

So why is a filled S considered a variety on some (SBA Dollar) and not on other coins (this one)?

    Hype.

Why is an overpolished die like the 37-D 3 legged buffalo, or the 1922 no D cent so valuable while the two feather buffalo nickels or the 1968, 69, and 70 no mintmark nickels basically worthless. One had a good PR agent and the other ones didn't.
