Here are three coins with what may be FG errors on the artist's initials. Some of them I can barely make out and I know in some years there are documented errors for the FG initials. Maybe these are others. Any thoughts? Thanks in advance! 1) 1973 P - Triple FG? Just MD? In the second pic, the top-right side of the F can be seen with three F's - the middle is longest. The F and G appear to have multiple tiers, but not in a clean, orderly staggered pattern as I've typically seen with MD's (though I'm sure there are examples of more chaotic MD's). It appears to be more-or-less randomly located. 2) 1969 D - Missing or weak F? Only a small part of the F is showing. G is showing but it's very weak. The '69 D is documented (Cherrypickers': FS-901) - weak strikes are common, but completely missing ones are rare. This one has most of the F missing, if that counts for anything (?). 3) 1964 D - Grease filled FG or weak strike? The F can be seen but it's weak. The G is an indiscernible blob and most of the letter is missing.
The first one is die deterioration, the second is from an abraded die(as is the "No FG" in the Cherry Picker's), the third one is probably a combination of a partially grease filled die and circulation.
For the second one, would there still be value > 1 cent since one letter is almost completely missing (read: half value of no FG)? Or is it all or nothing?
Short of snagging a sucker, it is all or nothing, or perhaps I should say "should be". For whatever reason - which surely someone could explain - partial initials are extremely common on the 69-D, so this coupled with the CP listing surely adds understandable confusion.
It's all or nothing with that one. The only reason the 69D "no FG" has any premium at all is because it's listed in the CPG. You can find other years where it's not uncommon to see the FG polished off the die.
