This coin has some strange toning in pictures but is much less subdued in hand.dd: I am wondering if it has been obviously dipped/cleaned or can this be natural album or cabinet toning. In hand it just looks gray/brown with some luster left. Not much sign of any circulation. I see no hairlines. Thank you for any response.
That is a smoking hot FE. Very nice. I dont have my reference handy but am looking at the die crack on the rev at 10:00
nice looking FE Cent, looks like it may have had a mineral oil bath but that shouldn't hurt the value. VERY NICE!!!
Great coin.........( here comes the " but" ") There are luster breaks evident and it appears to have been cleaned. AU and messed with is my opinion. Now the next "but "....... Net pictures are impossible to judge, thats just my quick take based on pics posted
On a side note, it is not unusual for AU-58 coins to trade at 60+/63 levels, any high AU with eye appeal that " pops " is usually much more attractive than an ugly Ms-60 or MS-62 coin....this has been discussed many times here. I'll stick to it tho, the coin does not look original
it seems like a pattern of scratches right below the eagles talons, almost following the curve of the rim?
Yes, I see that as well as the horizontal rubs under the eagles head. The luster breaks and the color indicate cleaning. The reverse also shows horizontal and parallel scratches.
I agree with Jack. Looks like old chemical cleaning that retoned nicely. Their appears to be lines above the ONE on the reverse that toned over IMO. I don't see a lot of luster. but need angled pics to see it. This looks like a coin GSC sells on eBay by the photos (they generally sell nice coins IMO). Regardless of any cleaning eye appeal appears A+ and it is a worthy coin to me at maybe $300ish or so. Wouldn't think it's a good deal over that.
Beautiful FE This looks like MS quailty.....in my opinion :hammer:......Unless you owned it from the time it was minted and released....can we ever know if it was cleaned or not cleaned....Any how very nice looking Flying Eagle
It may have been cleaned, but it was well before our time and does not affect its value. I wish I had one as nice. MS at least:goofer::goofer: If you need a better grading - SEND IT TO ME And I'll get back to you:rolling::rolling:
I thought all cleaning affected the grade, and therefore the value? Guess I was wrong learn something new everyday
:thumb: Thank you all for the comments. I tend to agree with Jack and Boss that it has been cleaned in the past and fear the dread BB if sent in. It remains an attractively toned piece nevertheless.
