Hey Guys, with so many of them out these, I was just wondering which magazine was your all's favorite, I'm looking for a few good ones to subscribe to. Thanks
My personal favorite is COINage. Numismatic News is a very good weekly newspaper, keeps a guy up to date a lot better than the monthly publications. If you join the ANA you would receive the Numismatist every month and Donn Pearlman's article on the very last page is always a hoot
Not to be a contrarian, but honestly, I think most of them are poor. You are lucky to find one interesting article, if that, and way too much advertising. I prefer to get my coin news online. If forced to decide, Coin World is probably the best...Mike
I read both Coins and COINage semi-regularly, but I'm not overly impressed with either of them. I was actually going to start a thread about the lack of a really good magazine in our hobby. Before anyone gets offended by my comment, consider the following: While there is a wealth of information offered by many of the numismatic publications - both magazines and newspapers - there is very little entertainment value to any of them. I know, some of you are already wondering why I mention entertainment value in relation to coin magazines, and maybe that's the problem. When I read Coins or COINage, I feel like I'm reading a magazine for my dad. Mostly bland, long articles with very little content that would be appealing to younger readers. While I'm into the facts, stories and figures that these magazines contain, couldn't they also pepper them with some more entertaining pictures, personal accounts, article variety, outlandish "sold for" reports from the world of eBay, etc. I know their circulation figures aren't earth-shattering and maybe that's because much of their readership is dying off! There are many ways to make a publication appeal to younger generations, but the editors don't seem to have any interest in doing so. I know this because I wrote a letter to both mags, and the response I got was akin to "While we appreciate your input, your ideas will not necessarily appeal to our target audience." In other words, thanks but no thanks. There are multiple reasons that Maxim magazine outsells Coins 50-1, and the girls in bathing suits is only one of them. (No, I'm NOT suggesting we have girls in bikinis holding slabbed coins on the covers.) Come on editors, have you ever MET anyone under the age of 50??? There's about three generations of people out there saying, "Sure, teach us...but can you entertain us at the same time?" And, the good news is - if you can find a way to do this, we're willing to PAY for it!!!!! Maybe the reason that so many people think that coins are only for stodgy, older people is because no one is trying to reach or appeal to anyone else. It's a novel idea...now if only someone would listen. pCG
magazines any coin forum nowadays is better than any coin magazines or newspapers. we got a lot of coin informations from coin forum. while that of coin magazines or newspapers gave you too many ads with very little info and incorrect or very late figures, mintages and prices.
Coin World and Numismatic News for the weekly reading, and COINage as a monthly. I like the time capsel feature in COINage. I think that MaestroPCG does make some points in his post about the material presented. At times it does come off as chalk.
Thanks guys, I was just looking for a good one to subscribe to, and I know that this might annoy some of you, but also to advertise in! Right now I get florida sportsman and stuff, but it'll be nice to get mags for coins. Thanks for all you help
I like Numismatic News and have also read Coins and Coinage. I also agree that these magazines could be improved to be more interesting.
It's all really what "you" want out the the mag. Some of the coin mags publish good articles with facts and history lessons (That what I like them for). Others play up mostly to sellers and marketing coins. I collect the articles on the history and stories behind the coins as learning tools for myself and others.
Coin World appears to be one of the most popular at coin shows. It appears that evey coin show I go to there is a table full of them. However, receiving a coin magazine in the mail may be something to consider depending on where you live. For instance around here where I live few people get gun, coin, stamp, knife, etc magzines unless they come in an envelope with nothing advertised as to what it is on the outside. Not that our mail personal have any bad intents, but also any such magazines hanging out of a mail box could be an add for criminal intents. In and area such as a big city or thier suburbs, house robberies are way to common and advertising something to steal is just not smart. Forums like this are better, faster, less personal information, more up to date, etc. Also, there are many other web sites that are much more detailed than a magazine such as coppercoins.com when it comes to Lincoln Cents for instance.
I'm fairly lucky in that the local library has Coin World. I've found Coins and COINage to have a lot of interesting reading also. I can't really say about Numismatic News, I have to travel about forty miles to get to the closest place that sells it and it seems like it's always sold out. I'm guessing that's a pretty good sign though. I guess you can't really go by me though, I'll read about anything I can get my hands on and it's all new to me. If you decide to subscribe to a magazine be sure to check ebay for prices for a subscription. I thought I had a deal on Coins magazine until I was tipped off about that by someone in here. I could have gotten it on ebay for a third of what I paid. *grumble grumble*
