What is your favorite coin series? Post your favorite here and describe why you like that series. I like the Buffalo Nickel. They are my favorite coin out of my collection 5 common date wheat pennies, one common date ihc, and one common date mercury dime. (Because they are cheap to buy undated!)
Morgan Dollars--have collected them since I was a child. My grandfather gave me the first one, and I have had a full set, and have started another Morgan collection. Franklin Halves--love the big silver design. Love the Liberty Bell on the reverse. Kennedy Halves--have a full high level MS set (will be photographed soon) in Dansco, including most of the proofs that are not in slabs. I have always loved that coin, and see it as the "sleeper" for the future.
walkers for me. just love both sides. mercs are a close second, just a bit small. designed by the same guy so I guess that makes sense. at least to me.
Jefferson Nickels If you want to know why, please visit my NGC registry collection by clicking the link below.
Tough question for me. I really like the Walking Liberty Half Dollar coins but I also like the Standing Liberty Quarters and I have more of those than the halves. I guess I'm still deciding.
Are the bulliion coins anyone's favorite? I am still deciding but I do like Barber coins. I also like seated coins. I have been buying a couple here or there. Of course I like any coin found in circulatoin worth more than face but these are definately not my favorite. I guess I am gathering an any grade "type" collection but don't stop at one with some of them. For example I have 2 standing, 2 seated quarters, 4 barber quarters, and 9 Mercury dimes but 3 of them were found in circulation. I also like wheat pennies.
Easy, Barbers. Some of the scarcest US coins in mid-circ grades. Beautiful design in my opinion, and there isn't much competition.
Capped Bust Half. The design and their lace in history fascinate me. Maybe if I'm lucky I'll get to join the BHNC sometime before I die. lol Guy
As far as older coins go, I like Morgans of course. For recent coins, I'll probably also catch a lot of flak for saying it, but I like the state quarters. I would have preferred that they were released two per year instead of five, but you get what you get... One of these days, if I can find a frame that isn't too cheesy, I'll probably put together a display set of silver state quarters, and I'll probably limit it to the 50 states and leave out DC and the territories. If you're going to collect every single year and mint mark of a coin series, you might as well get some variety in there. IMO - It just isn't very interesting looking at a completed set of Lincoln Pennies or Roosevelt Dimes. With the exception of the date and the mint mark, they're all virtually the same! (More flak incoming! )
I like Jefferson Nickels probably because it was the first set I attempted to put together one by one in uncirculated for each and every date and mint in the best condition I could find. I still continue after 35 or more years of collecting and studying them, manage to upgrade or grab a duplicate that is unusually better than what is usually encountered. It is a bottomless pit for varieties and an opportunity for learning what makes a common nickel, quite uncommon. The skills I have acquired by studying this series are helpful in understanding other series as well. In second place, would be Buffalo nickels and then Franklin halves in third. Type coin collecting is another favorite project of mine, to try to get one of each type of US coin example in the best condition I can afford.
Well I'm partial to Toned Franklin Halves. To me the toning is incredible and the series is pretty much dummy proof. A decent toned Franklin half runs between 150-300 so they are affordable. On top of this you have many different varieties of coloring. Not to mention that many have reverse doubling. To me it is a coin that someone new to the community can sink their teeth into. Perhaps when I become more indepth with numismatic knowledge I'll move on to Large Cents. Might even move into Ancients before death.
