Hi guys, I want to show you a rare portrait on an As. Faustina RIC III Antoninus Pius 1171b (as) AD 141, As, Rome Obverse : DIVA FAVSTINA: Bust of Faustina I, veiled, right Reverse : AVGVSTA S C: Ceres, standing left, holding torch and corn-ears 9.44 grammes - 25mm. Seems to be a rarity with this veiled portrait ! I found no other reference in auction from last past years. What do you think about that ? Regards from France
That's lovely! As a general rule, portraits of Faustina I with a veiled bust are more rare than their corresponding bare-headed versions. I have long kept a specialty collection of Faustina I coins and I have only one middle bronze with a veiled bust, this dupondius with Providentia on the reverse: Faustina Senior, AD 138-141. Roman orichalcum dupondius, 12.07 g, 26.6 mm, 12 h. Rome, AD 141. Obv: DIVA AVGVSTA FAVSTINA, veiled and draped bust, right. Rev: AETERNITAS S C, Providentia standing left, holding globe and scepter. Refs: RIC 1163ab; BMCRE 1459; Cohen 38 var; RCV 4635.
