I bought a collection this morning, and this is one of the really old coins that was in it. It's about the size of a US half dollar, thicker than a silver dollar, and weighs 24.3 grams. Looks like a gold coin to me....and feels like one too.

Anybody here recognize it? I'd appreciate any help I can get.

There are a couple dozen roman coins, some colonials....class is about to begin. I know nothing of these kinds of coins.....yet.

Faustina II Brass sestertius horridly cleaned. Here she is shown as daughter of Antoninus Pius; later she was wife of Marcus Aurelius. I suspect the reverse is Juno but that is more a hunch than a studied opinion. Gold that size would weigh a lot more and the Roman gold coin of that period was much smaller.

Post picture of the others and we will see what we see.

Thanks.....I will try and post some of the smaller coins after I get them photographed. There are probably somewhere around 30 or so coins that I know nothing about.

Gonna go grab a bite to eat....but did take a picture of a few other coins in another thread for starters.

It doesn't look like gold to me. I would say (polished) brass for the colour...

Of course it's not gold, and can't be.
Just the SC on reverse says it all : gold and silver where minted by order of the Augustus. Brass and copper after a deliberation of the senate : Senatus Consulto. It is a brass sestertius
