Here's a pretty little 1674. I have a 1672 thats about EF, but unfortunately when I scanned it into my computer I accidentally pasted the reverse of that 1674! Talk about a mule!

De Orc - pity there aren't any hammered farthings in there. I've been on the look out for one of those nice, tiny portcullis pieces of Elizabeth.

I only have one rose farthing. These are kinda interesting pieces, largely because of the way they were struck. Instead of being cut from sheets of metal as most coins of the era were, they were punched out, giving them an almost scyphate shape. I was once told this piece was fake, but I disagree.

You going for the full farthing run :)? Anyone know anything about half-farthings though :S I've heard that the third farthings were purely for Maltese use which is a tad strange

Yes I have a few of both :kewl:

The 1/3 farthing was issued in Malta as the Maltese had previously used a coin called the Grano this was worth to 1/12 of a penny, so they coined the equivelent British coin.

The 1/2 farthing was issued initialy soley for use in Ceylon but was made legal tender in the UK in 1842 despite a lot of protest and was demoniterized in 1869

    Ps
forgot to mention 1/4 farthings as well LOL they again were issued for Ceylon and were never legal tender in the UK

I have a handful of Rose Farthings and Traders Tokens from 17th Century England. I've yet to ID them, to put them in my collection but I will shortly. I've been told that some of them managed to find their way to the New World (Colonial U.S.) so I've picked up a few for my collection and I add ones when I can. :thumb:

They are so small and it's understandable that peeps back then had a little pocket sack to keep them in because there was no way they'd stay in your pocket and it also explains why so many are found by metal detectorists. :D

    Ribbit :)

Lol, a quarter farthing? That's just strange. I've never even seen one of them - i'd guess there about the size of those titchy wee fanams. I'll need to keep a look out for them (hopefully without the need of a micro-scope ;)) Whenabouts were they issue? I'm going for a George IV farthing run atm simply because it's short and sweet :)

Hmm ... sounds like an intersting albeit expensive run ;) Coincidentally shortly after reading this post I managed to locate and buy:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....m=280276601951&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=018
Photos aren't too great so i'll guess i'll have to wait for arrival before getting a proper grade but it looks pretty good from here :)
Btw, it's your fault if I end up going into debt trying to collect quarter farthings :p

Lol... well I have a 1953 farthing, with Elizabeth II on it (and the wren on the reverse).

Almost the last year they were made (1956 was the final year for farthings, wasn't it?)

Be fun to put together a type set for farthings... got the most recent one already so suppose could work backwards from that! Maybe...

It's as good a way as any, just watch you don't get lured into the trap of half, third and quarter farthings like I was about 6 hours ago ;) Who'd have thought that an MS 1/4 farthing costs in the region of a grand :S But good luck whatever your decision :D
