I ran across a few sites discussing FAO coin albums. Seeing that I have never heard the term before I tried searching for information on the subject. What are FAO coins? Are they still in production? Is it part of numistmatics? Are there any organizations that are active and deal with the subject what ever it is? As you can tell I'm in the dark about the whole FAO area? Anybody out there to help this clueless individual? Thanks for any help at all? 1991retiredarmy[wins#619]
FAO stands for Food and Agricutural Organization and yes they are definitely a part of numismatics. I do not believe they are still being issued but thousands of them were by over 100 countries. You can read a good deal about them - HERE But I might suggest, if you really want to know about FAO coins that you contact Joe G. on WINS. He was for years the FAO King. He knows more about them than anybody I know.
Ed,quite a few British Commonwealth countries have issued F.A.O. commemorative coins. Some of them were found in circulation such as the Tongan coins. There are others that are solely NCLT medal-coins.I have a silver Maldive Islands AH1399 (1979) silver 100 Rufiyaa in my collection.I bought this directly from the F.A.O.,whose office is in Rome,Italy.
