Hi, This has been in my collection since I've been a kid and I have NO idea what it is about. The date on the token is 1912 and it was in my "family attic stash". I can safely tell you that no one in my family had any money to be travelling in 1912. Of course, it could have been given to them later, etc. BTW, family is located in Minnesota at that time. The token is a very, very dark brown. So when I scanned it, I tried to lighten it and bring out the text. Looks like crap, but I think it's readable. Just to help out - I'm getting: Copyright 1912 - R.V. McKenzie (I'm not sure of the R.V.) And it's copyright and it's for playground use. I guess it's the obverse which is fascinating since it's a 3-D token - the runner or whatever sticks out from the token. You know, I got this from my folks when I was a kid and I thought the NNPS was some kind of Russian designation. It's the only "3D" token I have.
IMHO it was some kind of token for a local Park System in some city and you had to have the token to gain entry! NN possibly stands for the location/name and PS might be for Park System. Frank
I thought that too at first, but read what it says again, it says - For Playground and Recreation Association of America. And it has the copyright notation. Now look at the other side, see how much relief there is in that ? Tokens genrally weren't struck in such deep relief. That's what makes me think - medal !
Doug, You are probably right! I didn't catch the "ASSN." as it was hard to read and totally overlooked "OF AMERICA". Frank
For whatever it's worth - the "runner" on the obverse sticks out a lot. I've got it in a 1.5 x 1.5 and I'm stretching its limits. I don't know how to desribe its size and color, but it would be basically a 3-D lincoln. I could care less about prices, etc. I just want to know where this is from.
Quick reply. Don't know if it's obvious, but the scanned image is the size of a penny (1 cent coin). So I would hesitate to say that it is a medal for some kind of sports event - but heck, I don't know what they were giving out in 1912.,......
The year 1912 may not really mean the year of when it was struck - it maybe to commemorate an event back then but I have no idea about US history.
