Im struggling to determine weather I have KM#PS5 or wether its just a mint set I got it very cheap on eBay it doesn't come with the sleeve or any other information for that matter it has some blue toning on some coins as it was in a picture frame I guess the sun and heat has caused this ! Here are the pictures I would love any help, also if it is this is the crown silver ?
It's a proof set. I had believed these were stable packaging but it looks like the cu/ ni is tarnishing. Tarnishing seems to be simply sped up by heat and if the packaging is poor would have happened anyway. I like the Falkland Island coins due to the low mintages and especially the mint sets. The large silver coin is a one year type coin in sterling and has a mintage of only 5,000 (as does the set). This is exactly the sort of set that is getting melted now since the demand is low and silver high. The set is listed at $60.
I got it for £4 so in happy ! The fools cannot them down all they want it'll just make mine go up in value thanks alot !
I like this set a lot. It also has good long term potential. For the long term you might consider busting up the set and stabilizing the coins in acetone or alcohol. I know this is anathema to most collectors but if this set continues to tone at this rate the cu/ ni will be destroyed in another 25 years. You should be aware that busting up the set will decrease its current value a little and could have an even larger effect on future value. But the set will ultimately be worth the sum total of the coins and if any are ruined it will affect the value. ...Just a thought and there's no rush to action here. I routinely do this at the very first sign of bad packaging and then do it to all like sets in the future even if they are still pristine. Keep in mind though that this is the first unstable one I've seen for FI so it could be a fluke. It's a nice set and a great price.
