Despite multiple reports to eBay, this auction was allowed to proceed to its conclusion: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300322295367&_trksid=p2759.l1259 It clearly has a type-1 reverse, one of the most common Chinese forgeries, and numerous other problems besides, and still sold for over $900 with 40 bids. If bidders had simply taken the time to learn the basics of the series, they would not have been fooled. Very sad.
Wonder how this guy from Argentina gets all the trade dollars he sells ? Could it be from China ? JMO rzage
Ebay has really slowed the yanking of scam auctions....they are hurting bigtime. Look at their stock prices !! If the allow an auction to run it's course, then they get final value fees as well. Only after ( in many cases ) they will disavow ( hide and remove the item from all public records ) an auction, but still charge the seller his fees, olny after locking the paypal. It's a win win for the bay. I have not sold an item on ebay in 5 weeks and have no immeadiate plans to start again. 3000+ 100% pos feedback powerseller and I don;t really give a rats a z z for selling there any more but I do still activly participate in reporting the fraudsters.
But it's teeing a lot of buyers like me off , I rarely even look at ebay anymore , maybe that's hurting their bottom line more , I hope . rzage
It's really aggravating when me and some others report it with the diagnostics, and get a canned email that says they'll have a group of 'experts' look at it- and nothing happens! Smoke and mirrors, that's eBay Trust and Safety.
That one even has that hazy look to it so I don't think it's one of the new ones coming out of China, I think it's an older one that's thicker than it should be, to make it weigh the right amount. :goof: Thanks for sharing Charles! :thumb: Ribbit
Bingo! He weighed it and it came out 420 grains. Hmmm... that would be just like an unc coin which this isn't. Doesn't take much wear to knock off a few grains now does it. I see them occasionally at work. The first thing we do is weigh them THEN start the visual inspection. A worn, legitimate example can be off by a gram or more. That's quite a few grains.
If they buyers can't do research on the coin, and series, and buy the book before the coin, then let them be parted with their money, let them learn the hard way, because in the end it is only their fault
And there are a few slabbed coins on Ebay worth avoiding as well: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170344040890&_rdc=1 ...and someone has already bid on it. Poor fella.
gopher: The seller is very funny! he says: "In this case, judge the coin and not the grading company." Perhaps he should have said: "judge the coin, not the seller, or the stupid, idiotic waste of plastic grading company."
gopher: did oyu notice that seller's other stuff, like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1776-US-COLONIA...66:2|39:1|72:1205|240:1318|301:0|293:1|294:50 love it.
Is there any kind of on-line reference to use that identifies what to look for to spot trade dollar forgeries? In other words, how do I educate myself on this? Thanks! -StephenS
Lucky for you as it's bad luck just to look at such a sorry listing. And very good luck for the poor guy that had already bid $99 on it.
Unfortunately for the uneducated it's not so obvious and while I have seen some good online info on identifying counterfeits it was not easy to find.
