A friend gave me this nickel the other day as it looked strange to her. It doesn't have any lettering on it at all and is alot smaller than a regular nickel. Anyone ever see one?

This appears to be either a dryer coin or has been dipped in some kind of acid. I am sure the experts will chime in later with a better explaination.

I see indications of an acid drop on the field of the coin

I'm going to say a dryer coin. It sits and rolls and rolls in a dryer. That's why it's smaller and consistent in diameter. Some people believe it could be a spooned coin which now a day's is a generic term it seems.

I would not be surprised if this coin were battered inside a dryer for a long time. The rims look flattened and pushed into the devices--which those dryers do.

Post mint damage of some sort, probably one of the methods described...

Yep, looks like a coin that rolled around inside a washer or dryer. BTW, I noticed your comparison coin has a mint mark on the back. It might be an older one so check the date ;-)

My first job I worked as a handyman for a plumbing company, the owner of the company also had a chain of laundromats and we would occasionally find coins just like the above nickel that had rolled around in the drum of the dryer. Over time, coupled with the heat of the dryer, the coin is beaten in with the spooning look and is also worn significantly. The best part of servicing the dryers for me was that we had a deal, the owner kept the silver, I kept the gold. He did not think I would ever find any, but alas I found gold charms, necklaces etc.

I don't know what happened to this little nickel, wish I could take a better pic but that's the best one I could come up with. Would rolling around in a dryer cause the nickel to have all it's lettering removed? The lettering on both sides of this little nickel are gone but it looks like there never was any that's what makes it truly odd.

Yes, we see these all the time. It is definitely a "spooned" coin. If you don't believe us, get a nickel and a spoon or dryer and see what happens.

Forget spooned, the obverse and the reverse would not effected in such a way. Also, spooning a nickel wouldn't work well , it would wear out the spoon before it would effect the nickel. Nickel is too hard.

Forget acid, there is no sign of the coin being acid dipped.

This coin is indeed one that got stuck inside the fin of a commercial clothes dryer and the coin remained inside , probably with other coins and that is what caused the damage.

    Thanks,
    Bill

Ok I'll accept the dryer theory as it makes sense for the size. I guess I just have to have faith that all that heat removed the lettering, right? Whatever the case I will continue trying to get a better pic, a good enough pic and this little guy may go on ebay. Just kidding, the girl who gave it to me would kill me if I sold it for $2. Neat little nickel for sure!! :D

:high5: Finally! Someone else who has first hand experience with seeing these fresh from the dryer!! I feel validated! I think it took six months for me to get people to believe that dryer coins were not spooned!

    Have Fun,

Fretboard, heat did not remove the lettering, it is actually wear. Continued tumbling with other coins inside the fins, rolls the edges and beats up the details on the obverse and reverse of the coin. The longer the coin remains in the dryer fin with other coins, the worse the coin looks.

Good theory and I'll take it. :high5:

Edited to show the better pics of this nickel. :hail:
