Would it be wrong to have a fake coin collection or try to make one. Not that I would but I know a dealer who has a collection and sometimes sells them (any fake, not to deceive anybody) for $5.00. What do you think?
You can collect anything you want. I don't know why you'd want to collect fake coins, but there are those who collect counterfeit paper money if the particular bills can be attributed to a certain counterfeiter. Clinker
I believe that it's technically illegal to be in possession of known counterfeit coins. So I don't KNOW if any of mine are counterfeit ...
I'm not so sure that it's illegal to possess them so long as you don't attempt to pass them off as authentic. There are many people who are known to collect counterfeits as counterfeits and the Secret Service isn't knocking their doors in.
I have some fake coins that I have picked out of circulation...so really I have done a service. Sometimes to fill a gap, buying a copy is the way to go...if one of the gaps that needs filling is very rare and expensive. Like with the 1933 british penny.
I have a few contemporary counterfits that actually have some history to them. its kinda fun One of them i didn't even know what the heck it was, untill a very knowledgable dealer told me it was a counterfit british coin that circulated before the revolution... I will see if i can dig it up.
My understanding is that it is permissable to have (own) counterfeit coins, as long as you do not attempt to sell them as real items, or attempt to pass them into circulation as legal tender (which would happen if you try to use them to purchase anything).
There are some types of counterfeited coins that are collectable. For example, a counterfeited gold ducat by the St. Petersburg mint is one notorious example. Another would be the Swedish counterfeit of huge copper 5 kopeks.
Some people refer to their counterfeit coin collections as their "black cabinet". So far as I know there are six Japanese yen in my black cabinet, plus one coin that I'm still researching. All six were purchased with knowledge of their status, although two of them were being peddled as genuine.
Is that also what is meant by "Darksiders"? I've seen the term used here, but don't know what it means.
The terms Darkside for world coinage and Darksider for world coin collectors originated on the PCGS forum some years ago. It's only in the last couple of years that I've seen the terms spreading to other forums. Collectors of US coinage are known as Litesiders, and collectors of Canadian coins as Greysiders.
Thanks, I never heard these terms. We all have a lot that we can learn (at lease I do), and this is the place to do it (learn).
LMAO... this reminds me of seeing things like wallets made in a third world nation labeled as " GENUINE NAUGAHIDE". yeah son this here wallet is made from REAL "fake leather" I love double entendres*
Ahh... thanks for clearing that up. So, that makes you a Darksider then as I believe I have heard you state that you don't collect US coins???
So, if you collect foreign cions do you hear echos of "Luke, I am your father." Sorry but I couldn't type in the intonation to make it more real.
Isn't there a famous Jefferson Nickel counterfeiter? I can't remember his name but I remember seeing some of you all speaking about him.
