I got the Morgan on the left as a gift Friday from a friend, the Morgan seems off to me it looks a bit off and Im not sure but feels lighter than the others I own is it fake? Please help with your thoughts. Thank you, Sherri
It's definitely a fake. It looks cast from the photo. But what do I know? I'm just a moron when it comes to counterfeits. By the way, it is an 1890-O Morgan, minted in New Orleans.
That is definitely fake. Look at the breaks in the wings and look at the eagel bill among other things... Ruben
one thing about the Morgans is that they are asthetically perfect and I can often spot a fake like I could spot a fake Van Gough It might have the VanGough technique but it just aint from the hand of VanGough Ruben
Perhaps someone on here will know better, but perhaps that is a contemporary counterfeit? If so, that would be something of a collector's item I would think.
My guess China. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280286034881&ru=http://search.ebay.com:80/280286034881_W0QQ_trksidZm37QQfromZR40QQfviZ1
Otay, what did I miss? :goof: I know if there was one person I'd go to with a counterfeit question (silver/gold), it would be you! So whoever has doubts, doesn't know you! :hammer: It sure is nice having you back! :thumb: Ribbit
:loud:That's a fakey alright look at the rim area not normal for a authentic Mogan.it autual looks smaller in diameter and looks spooned jazzccoins joe:rolling:
I don't think it's a couterfeit i think it's a spoon job there are die breaks in this coin i indicated in black were they are.The rims looked like they are pushed against the denticles and touhing the lettering Doe's the rim have a reeded edge to it? Jazzcoins Joe:whistle:
Clearly a fake coin and not a very good one. The 9 looks like it was cast with playdoh. China Bling Dynasty
I think this is a fake as shown on the denticles on both the Obverse and Reverse of this coin. Next the Reverse the Eagle's Chest Features do not look right for any grade Morgan. The date on the Obverse looks out of place but that could be my photo. The bust on the Obverse is not well struck even for the attempts at an XF Grade. I do not know who made this fake but my hat is off to them for making it so easy to spot.
See another thread from this past weekend where a new member asked for opinions of his raw 1798 Draped Bust Heraldic Eagle Dollar that he bought for a "steal". Based on his very poor photos and his story of buying the coin cheaply I replied that my first thought would be the coin could be counterfeit. This new member proceeded to call me a edited because he is an expert on Draped Bust Dollars and he knows his coin is genuine. That's what you missed.
