Recently some extremely good 1795 and 1796 draped bust dollar counterfeits have come on the market. They all have xf-au details, and could easily fool most people. Not sure if anyone here will encounter one, but if you are looking to purchase one of these raw, double check the edge (the only noticable giveaway), and unless you are 100% certain of authenticity I would avoid buying until certified. Just thought I would give a heads up.

Was one of these on ebay fairly recently? I remember a pretty lengthy discussion on the PCGS boards about a 1796 dollar on ebay that looked really good, but had some people suspicious because of the manner in which it was being auctioned. It was about an XF coin if I remember correctly.

Not sure about that. The scary thing is, they would do quite well on ebay, as they would be near impossible to authenticate based on the obverse and reverse alone. :(

I'll add that someone I know is fairly certain they have one, and I'm going to see if they will send it to me so I can study it very closely and try to find an easy way to pinpoint it as counterfeit.

I remember that thread. Most people thought it was real...I wonder if it really was.
