I found this 1990 P today and I'm not sure what's going on on the reverse. Some help would be appreciated.
While I won't entertain the expert part of the querry ,I will respond with my opinion. I believe that you captured the coin in a weird light & what you are seeing in actually just plain ol' die polish & machine doubling. I have inverted you photo's color and to me the lines are under the devices appear to be raised not incused from scratches. I ahve looked at alot of coins this way ,although it takes a moment to get used to it really does bring out some details that are not viewable to a naked eye. I could be wrong but thats what I think.
At first I thought Die Polish lines, but after looking at Jasons (please don't be weirded out I know your name, I have a good memory) inverted picture, I don't think so. Don't Die polish lines usually all flow parallel in the same direction throughout the whole coin?
No ,they dont .It really depends . I have seen them circular , random , Straight & Almost making the coin look like Freddy Kruger got ahold of it. Crap, I am freaked out & now you have my GPS location .... Oh crud I know lots of stuff about you too.... X files here we come.
I also wondered if you noticed that shape on column 4. It's definitely raised above the surface of the bay. I'm almost positive it's not a gas bubble, the top is evenly flat and the outside edges are well defined. I'll see if I can get a good photo of it later.
What you have to the left is a interior die break or die chip what you have to the right look like striation makes from excessive polishing of the die. The die break or die chip is an error, but not the striation marks, Jazzcoins Joe
I see clash marks and die scratches from intentional die abrasion that was probably done in an attempt to erase the clash marks.
