~3¾ X ~2½ X ~3/16 inches; ~227 grams, MACO; Bronze, Merrimac Iron Cladding. Obverse: Upper Left; Oval Logo; Association Edison Illuminating Co's., 1885; Scroll: Association Of Edison Illuminating Companies, 44th Annual Meeting, Old Point Comfort, October 1-5, 1928 Graphic: Merrimac at Sea, Forts in Background. Legend: Iron From Plating Of Ironclad MERRIMAC...1862 Reverse: Blank, Except MACO at bottom, Rivet securing Iron, 2 Hemispheric Feet. When I got this I did some research...at the time, I could find no info at all. Perhaps I should renew my efforts?
Very few of the private mints keep accurate records, and MACO is no exception since they are known to have relocated their operations numerous times. Chris
This is only the second one of this piece, I've seen other than in a catalog. Very cool piece! I did own this one for a few years..... this one I wish I never let her go....
I wrote AEIC a short email asking for any info. Got the following today: Mr. Whittier, I’m afraid we do not have definitive information about the Merrimac Iron Clad item. I’ve reviewed the written minutes taken during that 1928 AEIC meeting and find no reference to the item. Judging from the back, I would venture that the item might be a paperweight. AEIC has had Annual Meetings every year since 1885, the year it was founded. It is not unusual for meeting planners to give out coins or other memorabilia to meeting attendees. I would guess that this item was a gift to the business members attending the meeting. What's that old saw?...Y'don't know what you've got 'til it's gone. I share your grief; that's a beautiful piece! wlw
