Here's a section that will be of interest to the British Commonwealth collectors here. How many of you have got some Euro coins from Ireland in your collection? I have got the 2002 issue from the 1 Euro-Cent up to the 2 Euros.I know Ireland has had a few coins denominated 5 Euros & 10 Euros. Can anyone please tell us about these pieces & what they commemorate? Aidan.
Yes, I have quite a few euro coins from Ireland, as from any other member of the European currency union. The Irish Central Bank issues an annual set of circulation coins (in unc. quality) every year, in a nice folder with varying themes. This year it also issued a proof set, for the first time in many years. As for Irish euro collector coins, in 2003 two coins (€5 and €10) dedicated to the Special Olympics were issued. In 2004 there was the €10 piece commemorating the enlargement of the European Union, followed by a €10 coin featuring Sir William Rowan Hamilton (born 200 years ago) in 2005. This year Ireland issues a €10 silver piece and even a small €20 gold coin celebrating Samuel Beckett (born 100 years ago). Unfortunately none of the collector coins can be purchased at face value ... Christian
Hello I've got the 8 denominations of circulating coins in Ireland (I've been lucky enough to visit Ireland twice in the past four years, it's a wonderful country) Cucumbor
I've been to both parts of island (Realm and Republic). I enjoyed both greatly and was able to stash away a few Euro coins at the time. I would definitely go back (assuming air fare and exchange rate doesn't price me out of the market).
Unfortunately, the only thing I was collecting then (1985) were Guiness foam moustaches...here's the proof. If I go back,I'll take a wad O'green and try to find some Irish hammered pennies.I don't have any. I really wish I had known about THESE in time. They went on sale April 7th,only 5000 sets minted and SOLD OUT in 1 week.
Ulster (Northern Ireland). The 'realm' that you're referring to is the British country of Ulster (Northern Ireland),which issues some very nice banknotes, which have a very strong Scots influence in terms of their design.I have always found Ulster's banknotes very difficult to find. Not many people from New Zealand visit Ulster, unfortunately.I like their 1 Pound notes. Aidan.
Here is a link to the official website of the Central Bank of Ireland.Unfortunately, the photos of the commemorative Irish Euro medal-coins are not clear enough to see the details of their designs. Aidan.
If you go to the Irish central bank's website http://www.centralbank.ie/frame_main.asp?pg=ncn_comm.asp&nv=ncn_nav.asp and click on a picture, a window with a larger image will pop up. But you are right, especially with the gold coin even the large image does not show the details very well. And here are some more detailed pictures of the gold coin: Larger images of the silver coin ... http://www.numismatico.de/files/ir10silber_908.jpg ... and the gold coin: http://www.numismatico.de/files/ir20gold1_125.jpg The actual sizes differ widely: The diameter of the silver coin is 38.6 mm, that of the gold coin is only 13.3 mm. The design is the same for both coins, except that the silver piece is part of the euro/star series. So the €10 coin has that mark at the bottom, the €20 does not have it. Christian
The Irish government present the 1st proof set of Irland since Euro in 2006 !!! Its very rare because of very tiny issue (5.000 pices) and huge demand on the european market. Picture of new Proof Set of 2006edited - self promotion is not permitted in this area of Coin Talk
Mikjo0,the Irish hammered silver Pennies are very difficult to find. You would have to go around a lot of numismatic dealers & auction houses in Dublin to try & find them. Aidan.
I finally got a complete set of Irish Euro coins that aren't dated 2002.It is the 2007 coins, which has the new modified reverse on the coins from the 10 Euro-Cents right up to the 2 Euros. The commemorative 2 Euros, which commemorates the 50th. Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, also has the modified reverse as well.I will be buying some of the other dates from the guy in Ireland I had bought these off. Aidan.
