Errors on 2004 Nickels?

    Just wondering...I came across a nickel today, cant remember which of the 2 varieties it was...but it lacks of luster in some parts of it...like in some places it was polished and some parts it wasnt...sorry I didnt post a pic...my scanner lacks of the USB cable!!! (my bro...took it!)

    Edit: Ok I found it is the Lewis & Clark: Boat Version (the 2nd variety I guess) and is minted in Philly. Isnt that easy to notice either...

    Ivan,

    It's OK. You don't have to post a picture for that one. I know exactly what you're talking about.

    I believe they are commonly called "laminations", and in my opinion, they are caused by the high-speed minting techniques used on cupro-nickel coins.

    It seems that about one out of ten, of the new nickels that I look at, has this defect.

    Could also be struck thru grease or something..??
