I just started collecting/coin roll hunting in the past five/six months. I've gotten a couple good wheats and some war nickels, but as of yet I've only found one "error" coin (1985-P die clash). I've it an 8x magnifying glass, and I'll occasionally break it out when the light catches a coin in a way that makes it look like a double die, but I was wondering if any coin roll hunters have an opinion on looking for errors in their coin rolls. Have you found any? If so, is it worth the extra time to examine each coin for errors? Or do you just briefly eyeball each coin and then double check with magnification if it looks suspicious? If this message was too long, I'm asking if it's worth checking every coin in a roll for errors.
To me coin roll hunting by itself is time consuming. However if you really know your stuff and you have a good eye you will notice them as you look at the coin for 5 seconds. it becomes instinct after awhile.
I have found blanks, clips, cuds and broadstrikes in roll searches. Most come with cents, the least common errors tend to be nickels and then dimes. I have a couple of nickels that I found over the span of a year, they are dated 1983 and have virtually the same cud. The one that is the most unusual are the blanks, I have found several with cents and one with dimes. None with nickels. Kind of amazes me that lots of people have no idea what they have in change.
Great, thanks guys! I've been doing nickels a lot recently and just haven't had any luck, but I'm gonna keep at it!
