I have a wheat cent with no mint mark and the date shows as 192 - can anyone help me to uderstand if it is indeed and error and indeed worth something? Thanks
Well there are 10 possibilities for the missing digit. One of which might be quite valuable. But to determine that a knowlgeable person would probably have to have the coin in hand. Take it to an honest dealer and see if it is worth pursuing. There are lots of counterfeits of the one valuable possibility.
Hi Rita and to CoinTalk. The good news is that you've found a forum that's loaded with very knowledgeable collectors, willing to share their knowledge, expertise, and love of numismatics. The bad news is that without pictures there is no way for any of us to tell whether you merely have a well-circulated coin on which the last digit of the year has been worn off; an error coin of the type known as "filled die", in which grease or other foreign substances get stuck on the dies during the minting process; a damaged coin; or something else. A filled die is the most likely answer, and those generally carry little or no premium over full die products. BTW cents minted in Philadelphia don't have mint marks.
