What do LDS, MDS, & EDS mean? Are they codes for different stages of "life" for a die?

You are correct! However, most Error/Variety Experts and References note them as Die Stages (Early Die Stage, Middle Die Stage and Late Die Stage) but these designations are in reality referring to the State of the Die (Die State) when a specific coin was struck (minted). And before you have a chance to say it, I will - "Why can't they make things more simple and agree upon the use of one word for the term (either State or Stage), so that it doesn't confuse people"!!!???
