If you find a coin with an errant letter on it (I think some people call it a dropped letter) should the letter be raised from the surface of the coin or should it be an indentation? Not sure what the correct terminology would be here so a little help would be appreciated.

The letter(or number) would be raised on the coin.

A dropped letter will be incuse (sunken). That is unless the material is retained.
