    Hi
I'm new here. Great site!! My mother-inlaw stopped by today. She asked if I could find anything about this Quarter she found. Is it an Error? If it is what type? Thanks Joe

First guess would be it was struck through grease. I've seen strike through patterning similar to what you have, but never the whole coin. Cool find.

    Thanks Guys
I'll get photos of the reverse. The center circle is rised up from where the wording is on the coin. Thanks Again. Joe

I can't see any change in topograpy. It just looks like a discolored quarter to me.

    Mike,

In the second picture, it appears that a portion of the center of the coin (noted by a circular ring which runs around the whole inside center portion of he coin) (You can see this best at the "B" in LIBERTY) is higher in some areas while lower in others. It also appears that outside of that to the rim, there are low spots and high spots as well as what appears to be doubling on the lettering. My guess would be that it was caused by a severely fatigued and distorted Die but the big question is, what caused the Die to become so fatigued and distorted!?!?

The explanation would have to be die deterioration, then. It can sometimes assume a very strange appearance. Maybe there was something abnormal about the die steel or its preparation (e.g., annealing, tempering).
