I bought this as a circulated error - third printing completely missing. Then I looked a little closer. Note the irregular top margin - it was crudely hand cut from its sheet. Conclusion: This note did not enter circulation normally, but was part of an incomplete sheet slated for destruction. This sheet was stolen, and the notes separated with scissors before being spent. Pretty cool, huh?
TexJohn... Is that note graded? Errors are very tricky and can be complex. If it is what you say it is based on your "conclusion".. that would be very cool indeed. I wonder if it could be traced back on Number's site with the plate#'s to see if it were from an uncut sheet? Have you considered sending it in to a TPG Co? In the past THE Noost posted results ffom chemically treated notes and revealed the effects by placing a "black light" behind the note to see if it was treated..cool Thread. The only erros I collect are off set printing (ink transfers) so I am not well versed in missing printings at all. Just thought I would ask these questions.. Very cool note, thanks for sharing it. RB
I'm not an expert, but I am a fairly well-informed collector. The note shows no trace of a third printing, front or back, and there is no chemical or abrasion damage to the paper apparent. It also passes the black light test. (That reminds me - I use a counterfeit detector for such purposes, they're cheap and you can get them at an office supply store.) The ragged top margin is even more apparent from the back. Uncut sheets of Series 1985 twenties weren't released to the public, so I'm left with my original conclusion - an unfinished sheet was stolen and the notes cut out by hand. Thanks for the advice. Maybe one day I'll send it to a TPG. Which do you consider good? I've heard unflattering things about CGA.
I have read and heard the same things you have. While in the early days of my Paper collecting I did buy some CGA Notes as seen in the Small Size I have posted..however, In the past few years I only buy PMG and PCGS graded notes. CGA is under new ownership and uses a "Black star" as a mark it was graded by the new owner..my plans is for PMG to holder my notes for the entire collection. Again this is personal choice. I have found PMG to be much more receptive than PCGS was to me years ago. Good luck with the note, I hope it turns out to be what you think it is. RB
