It appears to be a massive cud. If so, the reason that so much detail is lost on the obverse is because the metal flowed into the die break, and there was not enough left to fill the obverse recesses. Chris
one big giant reverse cud. Obverse I like that because they was no die on the opposite side to force the metal into the obv die. Very nice find. I am sure that the die was retired VERY shortly after that was struck.
Let's see? 1984 to 2014......that's about 30 years. Geez, it sure won't get much from Social Security. Chris
Amazing! Looks like a slightly later strike of CU-1c-1984-03R, seen here: http://cuds-on-coins.com/lincoln-cent-cuds-1984/ Again I say Amazing!
If you don't mind me asking, how much did you pay? Reason I ask is I did a search on ebay last night. 1984's with MUCH smaller CUDs were selling over $30. You might have gotten a steal of a deal.
look at how much this 82 coin selling on ebay looks like the OP'S 84 coin . http://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-Lincol...76?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item43c55d7110
